Epson Stylus Color 1160 Printer Issue

Ever since migrating from OS 9 a long while back I have been left without the ability to clean print heads, calibrate my printer, use specific printer options, etc. unless I boot into OS9. I have tried the Epson site many times looking for an updated driver that have all of the OS 9 functionality. I have put in a request to Epson and have never heard back. Is there a utility out there that can do all of this in OSX? I hate booting back into OS9. It is really the only reason I run OS 9 anymore. It's a pain.

I'd be happy to send the Epson Printer Utility to you
for OSX. Do you have an ftp site or public filder on
.mac that I can upload it to you?

It is impossible to find on the internet otherwise.
I've just been copying it from computer to competer
as I've upgraded.

Is there something similar for the Epson Stylus Color 740? I'm having the same problem of not being able to access the Utilities for my printer, unless I do it from an application that runs on Classic. Any suggestions or pointers would be much appreciated.

Hi, Theos Apple. Type Command-Shift-U to open the Utilities folder. Open Printer Setup Utility, select the 1160 in its printer list, and click the Utility icon in the toolbar at the top of the PSU window. This will open the Epson Printer Utility, if you have it, and if your printer is connected and turned on. Select the 1160 again in the EPU window, and the old window you're used to seeing with Nozzle Check, Head cleaning, etc. in it will appear.

Don't ask me why, but instead of being installed in the Applications>Utilities folder on your hard drive, Epson Printer Utility is installed here, at least in OS X 10.3.9:

Hard drive>Library>Printers>Epson>Utilities>Epson Printer Utility

If you'd rather drill down through all those folders than take the route described above to get to it, you can open it directly by double-clicking on it. I don't know what would happen if you moved it to the Applications>Utilities folder. If you try it, I'd be interested to hear whether method 1 above still works or not.

It seems utterly nonsensical to me that in the world's most advanced operating system, one should have to go to such absurd lengths to find these simple and often-needed tools that were right there in the Print dialog box in OS 9. Go figure.

I'm able to get to the Printer Setup Utility okay (I have it aliased in my Dock). But when I click Stylus Color 740 in the printer list, the Utility icon remains grayed out. I checked my son's iBook, which runs 10.4, and the Utility icon for the SC740 is grayed out there, too.

I know the functionality is there somewhere, because I can still access the utilities from the Print menu of any of my OS9 apps (running on Classic). Having Classic running by itself doesn't help; I still need to go through the Print option of an OS 9 app.

Any other ideas how I could get OS10 to recognize this functionality?

Hi, Lisa. Epson's own web site offers no OS X driver for the 740, even though a standard installation of Panther includes one. Are you able to print to the 740 (when it has ink and isn't clogged) from OS X-native applications, or can you only print from a Classic app, either in Classic mode or booted into OS 9?

It begins to sound as though someone may have thrown together an OS X driver for the 740 just so Apple could include one in OS X, but the driver wasn't an Epson product, or it wasn't complete enough or functional enough for Epson to be willing to offer it as a download.

Another possibility, which I've encountered before (to my amazement) is that Epson's US web site doesn't offer an OS X driver for the 740, but Epson web sites serving other parts of the world do. If that's the case, perhaps this Google search will turn it up.
