Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

It's pretty fiddly to work inside an iMac G4 so you must be cautious. Always take anti-static precautions. Here are three options for guiding you through the procedure:

I've also taken a fair few photos which you can find here.

I'd advise reading the reports on the xlr8yourmac drive database so get other people's experiences first.

You must replace the Thermal Paste when you close the iMac up or it will overheat.

It's probably worth replacing the PRAM Battery whilst you're in there as these have a finite life (once they fail to re-charge you may start to run in to snags - it's only a $5 part).

You should be fine with OS 10.4.8 but on older OS you may need PatchBurn.

You should be looking at a Dual Layer 16x Superdrive for the replacement not only are these most capable but only cost around $40.

I was able to follow the very helpful directions to replace my SuperDrive, replacing it with the Pioneer. My problem, embarrassing enough, is that the computer doesn't recognize the drive for burning purposes. Do you know if this requires a reload of the system software or is there a more specific fix? Your guidance would be most appreciated (particularly since I was able to follow the directions without frying my computer, always a bonus.)
