why does iOS darken my wallpaper after I set it?

I'm trying to use a white (for the most part) wallpaper so iOS makes the clock / labels black as seen in photo 1. But after I set it it darkens the whole image to a hideous grey and makes the labels white against it. Why is it doing this? And how to I fix it?

NOTE: It's not reduce transparency or motion. Tried that.

I dont have such a light wallpaper as you, but mine does the same. I think that Apple have added a slightly darker background for the home screen so all popups look correct. The new notifications contain a white-ish box around them. If they didnt do that, the white boxes would blend with the background and would look strange.

Its more for zooming/positioning. The lock screen wallpaper will always have a overlay, if this is from notification center or the text. I have never seen the text adjust to a white background so think this is more for placement so you don't have someones head with a clock on the front.

Lock screen is designed for text/notifications infront of the image, you only ever see it briefly while you unlock or look at the notifications, and makes sense to dim the background as the notificaations have lighter backgrounds than previously given
