Mail-moving messages constantly

Lately, when in Mail, the indicator at the bottom of the sidebar ALWAYS says "moving messages". It doesn't go away, even with a mail re-start. I've recently upgraded to Sierra.

I had this issue today using macOS Sierra 10.12.6, using Mac Mail with my Yahoo mail account. The Mail app was stuck moving messages after I erased messages in my Junk folder. While it was stuck, the Mail app continued to download new messages, but was not pushing any deletions or other changes made locally back to the server.

I tried the suggestions offered in this thread but they didn't help. Mail was stuck on the last message (Moving Message 84 of 84), and from the console it appeared that Mail was repeating the same processing over and over.

I was able to fix this by using the Mail app on my iPad to delete all the messages in my Junk folder. This caused the Mac Mail app to detect that the messages it was trying to move were no longer there and it finally stopped trying.

I tried it your way and it worked so now I went from downloading 1000 messages to 32 messages I went to my iPad and deleted the messages in my junk folder and it cause my MacBook to update the Downloading Messages area. Now it's stuck on downloading 32 messages so I will keep trying it the way you suggested until it reaches zero. Thanks a lot you were a great help 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities, guitarbruc,
From reviewing your post, it appears that the Mail app on your MacBook Pro on macOS Sierra isn't behaving as expected. Apparently it's moving email messages on its own and not completing the task. I'll be glad to help.
macOS Sierra: Quit apps -- With the Mail app open, from the menu bar, click Mail > Quit Mail. Then holding your shift key, reopen it again.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up -- Safe mode will make sure your Mac starts up correctly. Test how it responds in Safe Mode. If there are no issues, reboot normally and test in your own user account.
How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac -- If the issue is also happening in safe mode, use this article to test another user account. This will demonstrate if the issue is isolated to your account, or if it's system wide. Set up your email accounts,
then check if it's still moving messages.

Let me know how that goes and have a great day!

I have tried restarting in safe mode and saw no difference in behavior.

I have two email accounts. My Google account is the one having trouble moving messages. When I disabled my Google account and the other account behaved properly. As soon as I enable the Google account Mail cannot move messages again.

Help! I despise having to constantly restart mail to be able to read my mail.

I do not want to kill the Google account as I have 2 years of work related messages and I do not want to lose this archive.

After an extended, initially unfruitful chat with APPLE and some troubleshooting, it was suggested that I delete a mailbox within Apple Mail, an Embarqmail account. I was reluctant to do this but decided to try it. I went to the webmail page for that Embarqail account after I deleted some emails from with Apple Mail. Those emails weren't removed from the webmail page. It therefore occurred to me that Apple Mail wasn't communicating with that Embarqmail account.

I then decided to delete the Embarqmail account in Apple Mail. I then re-entered the Embarqmail account as a mailbox in Apple Mail and restarted my computer.

When the computer came back up the Embarqmail account in Apple Mail began populating with the emails that existed on the webmail page for Embarqmail.

I then began deleting some Embarqmail emails from with Apple Mail. The proper movement of mail began with Apple Mail resolving the "movement" issue.

If you're encountering this problem tread carefully.
