Updated to FCPX 10.3, many files' linkage broken

Has anyone had this issue? I've got a huge library with 78 video projects in it. Many clips are linked across different events in it. That is, I have an Updated Projects event with my project files, a Reshoot Footage event with new video, a Common event with an intro that's common across the projects.

I'm now seeing in some cases source files that I've renamed, plus what I originally renamed them from. The original files are there, but for some reason what I've renamed them to is a broken link. Anybody else experience this? I can find the source file in the FCPX library, but I can't seem to relink it to there. In my library, many of my files seem to have the original file and an alias. The original file has "fcp1" appended to it, e.g. "AC Fundamentals Review (fcp1).mov", and the alias is the title without it. "AC Fundamentals Review.mov"

I can pull the original file out of the library and try to relink it, but I get the message: "Incompatible file. The original file didn't have audio, but the new file does. Relinked files must have the same media type and similar audio channels as original files, and must be long enough to cover all the clips that reference the files."

Any ideas?

I'm not sure that this is going to be much help but In one library I had a couple of long clips which which showed as missing media after updating to FCP X 10.3. In the 'Original media' folder of the library in the pre-10.3 update backup they show as 'museum.mp4' and 'shooting.mp4' whereas in the Original media folder of the 10.3 library they show as 'museum (fcp1).mov' and 'shooting (fcp1).mov. The library was a bit of a mess since it contained clips like these, brought in from iMovie and stored within the FCP X library ('managed media') together with references to external clips, added in FCP (since in FCP X I decided from the start to use external media). I was able to relink them by dragging .mp4 versions from my external media folder onto the corresponding missing clips in the event. The original media folder now shows links under the original names to the copies in the external media folder as expected. (The local versions are still present and could presumably be deleted but I won't take the risk). Both files include audio.

Nevertheless many other clips stored in the library continue to work fine after the update. I updated about 10 other libraries, created in FCP X with external media, each with around 10 events each with around 6 projects and all went smoothly.

I have not encountered your specific relinking problem which suggests that FCP X has somehow got the wrong metadata for you files. Do your problem clip originals actually have audio or not?

I've got this issue on some of my files. These were renamed in FCPX before. I guess the upgrade process has a bug for those kind of files. I see my renamed name in the list of files and additionally the original names. When I click on my renamed files I see "Original"red flagged (missing). If I click on the original names, I see "Original" green.

Just to mention - these files have been also part of a multicam clip before...

I got this fixed by

  1. closing my mediathek
  2. going to finder and remove the " (fcp1)" from the filenames inside my bundle.
  3. After opening the mediathek again, I see the originals flagged green on my renamed files. So I recreated proxies for them and deleted the original filenames who doesn't have an original file now (because I stole it by renaming the file in finder).

My project and my multicam clip are fine again...puhh.

I am seeing this exact same problem. Seems to happen mostly with my GoPro files. My DJI files still show linked. This must get fixed. Apple broke 10.3. My library was fine before 10.3. Also, with one of my libraries, it continually has to upgrade it each time I open the Library. Plenty of disk space left which can contribute to the problem. Also, the Library will then say it cannot save anything and Close it out saving no changes.
