Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
When I play a video on YouTube, either through browser or app, if I exit out and pull up Control Center, the title of the video is there in music, but when I press play, it goes blank, and there is no sound. Anyone else having this issue? I'm using an iPhone 6s.
I'm having the same problem. A couple of days ago, YouTube background playback stopped working out of nowhere. I don't know what's wrong with it, but whenever I go to Control Center and hit "play", it just goes blank. I've tried restarting Safari (I prefer the YT layout on Safari over the actual app), and I've tried restarting my iPod completely. Nothing has worked, and if I have to pay for YouTube playback, heads are going to roll.
I have an iPod 6 with iOS 10.2, and I use YouTube through Safari. I updated the iPod when the update came out over a month ago, and I'm just now having this problem.

You can easily do it on the iPhone. Go to YouTube in Safari and play something. Click out of it, and swipe up your Control Center and slide left to go to the next page. The YouTube play option and volume controls will be visible. Hit play, adjust volume, click out of it, and it will continue to play in the background.
Same here, it did work up until like 2 weeks ago I've been doing it since iPhone 4, only thing I know of is use SoundCloud I think it's just YouTube not iPhone... prob trying to get more app use data time to demand more money from commercials
I have the same problem, you can try using other web browsers if you don't want to pay youtube red.
you can try using google chrome app, but I like using Opera Coast App. it works perfectly. 🙂 hope this helps.
It doesn't work on my phone even with Firefox! This is so frustrating! On top of that I am trying to update 10.3.1 and it's keep giving me an error with no explanation! Anyone else having this problem?
Same problem for me in iOS 10.3.1 , wouldn't work in any other search apps but WORKS IN PRIVATE SAFARI MODE for me! Thanks. Saved me a lot of effort trying more apps etc. At first I thought my phone had glitched because it played in background a few months ago. :)
I love how these apple reps or what ever they are always swear they know it all. And it's never the update. Obviously you don't know what's your talking about.
YouTube if used via safari most certainly played in the background. After the update it doesn't. If you use Firefox it works on the new update. Go ahead and try it and see.
They've just recently restricted it for Firefox too now. Was working for a couple of weeks but not anymore. If this is YouTube's way of forcing a subscription to YouTube Red it's a terrible idea. I'm not subscribing.
The tick to getting it to work in background is requesting a desktop version and low and behold you can listen to your YouTube music in background again ***** doing all the extra but iOS 10.1.1 ***** ! Worst ******** ever
I have 10.3.1. I've tried Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and Safari. I have tried opening the YouTube video in a private tab in each of those browsers. None of these have worked for me. As soon as I press play, it switches to music even though the music app is not even open.
Are you copying a link and pasting it? Mine didn't work when I did that. Mine only works if I:
-open new private tab in safari
-search YouTube into google
-click on YouTube website from google
-search the video title
-play video FULLSCREEN
-press off button/home
-press play on control/lock screen.
If I paste a link into private tab it doesn't work, also make sure all your other private tabs are closed before starting a new one to make this work.
I believe this is a thing that YouTube has done to anyone who has an account or who visits YouTube through a direct video link. That's why if you use private browsing (not signed into YouTube) and visit YouTube through the normal route then it 'should' work. What a pain in the bum google, stop messing people around.

Just tried my steps and they didn't work, but they worked yesterday. Tried private browsing in chrome and that worked today. But chrome and Firefox didn't work yesterday. Very strange and hit & miss.
Maybe try several search apps and private modes etc, I'm not sure how you'd get this to work consistently :(
Ahhhhh FINALLYYYYYY.
I swear it was working with Safari, and without a reason it stopped working. I didn't do any update or so. After seeing replys here, I tested it and yes it works in Firefox, but in Private mode only.
Yesssss now I can enjoy the music while my screen if off :-D
Except Firefox for iOS is a really BAD web browser for iOS.
Mozilla should be embarrassed even calling this web browser Firefox!
It does NOT resemble or work in ANY way, shape OR form like Firefox for full blown computers.
Firefox for iOS is NOT user friendly, AT ALL!
Firefox for iOS, IMSO, is a total FAIL!

Go to listenonrepeat.com
iIt's basically a database of all youtube videos but safari doesnt recognize the link as youtube because the web address is listenonrepeat.com so theres no restriction and it allows you to play it in the background with absolutely ZERO problems.
