My iPhone 7 sleep/wake button isn't working. It won't put my phone to sleep, and then it gets "stuck" and asks if I want to turn the phone off with the slider. Sometimes when I hit the X for cancel, it doesn't respond to that either. Then the whole thing freezes for a fee minutes. I thought it was a case issue, but it's still doing this without the case. Any ideas as to how to fix this?

Adding: double-clicking on the Home button only works about half of the time.

Perhaps this is caused by the new "raise to wake" feature. You can check this by turning the feature off:
Settings > Display & Brightness > Raise to Wake = "Off"
If you think you're having a hardware issue, the iPhone is still under warranty. Take it to an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Center for an assessment.
