Same songs are getting re-synced every time

I have an iPhone 6 running the latest IOS 10.1.1

My MacBook Pro is a 13" mid-2012 model running the latest macOS 10.12.1

I do not use Apple Music

Ever since updating to the latest iTunes 12.5.3 this week, any songs that I have added to iTunes or that I have played on my MacBook Pro since installing the update get re-synced onto my phone every time I run a new sync, no matter what. (Playing songs on my phone, however, does not appear to lead to a re-syncing of that song---only those that I have played in iTunes on my MacBook Pro).

It wasn't so bad when it was 20-30 songs a couple of days ago, but now it's up to about 500 songs, and it's getting really annoying.

I've reset the play counts, but that hasn't helped. Any ideas?

iPhone 6, iOS 10.1.1, iTunes 12.5.3

Thank God I found this thread! THIS FIXED IT!! :-) Summary below. I had the same issue as others did, and spent hours, both with Apple on phone (2 calls), & visiting Genius Bar in the Apple Store (3x)… all wonderful folks, all sincerely baffled by this! We tried all the various “fixes” short of wiping my hard drive!

So, just to give my personal summary to newbies with this issue:

  1. Go to iTunes > View > Show View Options (Command+J)
  2. Under Music, click Movement Name, Movement Number, and Work.
  3. Notice in your Library those 3 new categories showing there now. Chances are you’ll see entries in the Work column. Click on Work, and it’ll group those filled-in fields together. If you’re curious, select all those filled-in-field songs (click on the first; scroll down & shift-click on the last, to select everything in between), & at the bottom of the window it’ll show you how many items you’ve selected; chances are this number will roughly equate with the number of songs that have been re-syncing over and over.
  4. Now, with all those songs still selected, go to Edit > Get Info (Command + I). Check the “Use work and movement” box at the top. The “work” field will likely show in grey “Mixed”. In that field, hit the spacebar once, then backspace, to blank out the field. Click OK at bottom right. Now wait… when done processing, your Library should show nothing under the Work column.
  5. Now de-select the “Use work and movement” box at the top. Wait… when done processing, sync again. Wait… it MAY take awhile.
  6. Finally, sync again. Hold your breath… whew! Worked for me! 🙂

Regarding your grouping problem I had the EXACT same problem. I've figured out where they went. If you select a single song and Get Info you will see little arrows next to the Song field. You can select them and choose Work and you will see your Grouping information. It's something they've done for classical stuff.

Quite annoying

Regarding the continuous resyncing problem, I don't think it's a problem with your phone/nano because I have two devices and it's the same problem on BOTH devices.

For me, I noticed that any song on my external drive resyncs but anything local to the machine, on its drive, does NOT resync.

I am going to try editing a local file and see if that causes it to resync over and over. But I'm pretty sure it's an iTunes problem.

Sweet glory be hallelujah!!!! I fixed it. And thank you @risserfamily, because you provided the solution.

So I use the "grouping" id3 tag to sort my music in certain ways. I will usually add the data for that tag in a 3rd party encoder before adding the songs to my iTunes library. As @risserfamily noted, iTunes 12.5 now has an option for classical music fans that allows them to sort song titles into works and movements instead of just single song names. Well, as @risserfamily noted, iTunes 12.5 for some reason places the information you enter in 3rd party apps for the "grouping" tag into the "work" field in iTunes under that "work and movement" option. It does this whether you have "Use work and movement" selected or not. Well that's annoying, I thought. So last night I selected my entire iTunes library, hit "get info", and then checked the box where it says "Use work and movement" so that it would show the "work" field. I then cleared out that field and hit "Okay". After it applied the change to my entire iTunes library (I have over 19,000 songs so it took about an hour), I then selected all the songs in my iTunes library again, selected "get info", and unchecked "Use work and movement". It then took another hour to apply that change.

BUT...... this morning, when I synced my phone, it no longer re-synced the same 3500 songs like it has been doing since I updated to 12.5.3 last week.

I cannot begin to describe what a relief it is to have that problem solved! Thank you so much @risserfamily!!

If you have it set to Sync Music (using automatic syncing), I would go to iPhone's Music settings screen in iTunes and uncheck Sync Music. Apply change. Use iPhone to confirm all songs are removed from iPhone. If there are songs remaining for some reason, go iPhone's onboard Settings -> General -> Storage & iCloud Usage -> Manage Storage (under Storage) -> Music. Remove any songs still on iPhone there.

Then, go back to iPhone's Music settings screen in iTunes and checkmark Sync Music. Set it to sync songs like before. And Apply change. Hopefully, the problem no longer occurs.

Well, now it's re-syncing the same 3,500 songs every time I plug in and run a sync. As before, once it has re-synced those same 3,500 songs, as long as I leave my phone plugged in, it doesn't re-sync them if I press "sync" again. But if I unplug my phone, and then plug it back it in and press sync, it will re-sync those 3,500 songs again.

I have been reading around... and when others have had this problem in the past, they simply converted the ID3 tags to v. 2.3 and then back to 2.4 and that solved the problem. So I did that, but doing that is what caused it to start re-syncing 3,500 songs every time I plug in and press sync instead of the 500 it was doing yesterday.

I also re-installed a fresh copy of iTunes, but that didn't help either.

I am reluctant to try dumping my entire music library off of my phone and then putting it all back on. I have close to 20,000 songs and it usually takes several hours to complete that process. Another fear I have is that it will cause iTunes to start trying to re-sync my entire music library every time instead of just the 3500 songs it's doing now.

I think there's some type of corruption in the database that keeps track of songs on the iPhone. As an iPhone user, you must be prepared to do a complete Restore (Erase) if necessary. I'm "only" suggesting (at this point) you remove your music library, confirm all songs are gone, and sync them back. it may take a while, but you can start it when you go to sleep. Be sure to use a direct USB connection (not WiFi) for that sync, because it's faster.

It's also possible that the problem is on the iTunes library side of the sync, since doing something to your music library made the problem worse. If you don't use the built-in Time Machine feature to backup your system and user data automatically to an external drive, you should (or use some other backup method). Then, run Disk Utility and select your startup disk (usually called Macintosh HD) in the sidebar, and run First Aid to check for data corruption.

I also re-installed a fresh copy of iTunes, but that didn't help either.

It's probably not a problem with iTunes.

So last night, I dumped all the music off of my phone and verified that no lingering songs remained. Then I hard-booted the phone and restarted my Mac. I then plugged in the phone, and ran a backup.

Then overnight I re-synced all of my music back onto my phone. Today, I unplugged my phone and then plugged it back into my Mac and ran a sync. Alas, it still re-synced the same 3,500 songs back onto my phone.

All of this started when I updated to iTunes 12.5.3. Ever since then, if I play songs, add songs, or modify songs in my MacBook iTunes library, those songs will get added to the growing list of songs that iTunes resyncs onto my phone every time I plug in and run a sync. Playing songs on my phone does NOT add to the list. So I can't help but pinpoint the latest version of iTunes as the culprit, or at the very least, something in the way that that particular update is communicating with my library and phone.

Anyone have any additional ideas?

I have two problems with iTunes 12.5.3.17:

1. The first, less vexing issue is that iTunes no longer seems to recognize the "Grouping" id3 tag. When I modify MP3 files using a third-party MP3 tag editor, iTunes no longer recognizes the "Grouping" tag and will leave it blank when I import the files into iTunes. Never used to be a problem. Now I have to manually add that tag in iTunes whenever I import new files.

2. The second, and more bothersome problem is the same one on this thread. I decided to add my two cents and more specific details. Every time I plug my iPod Nano (7th Gen) into my computer to sync it with iTunes, it syncs the same 84 songs every single time. The common thread between these songs is that they are all on a smart playlist which contains all my 5-star rated songs (2,175 of them). Some of the 84 have been played others have not, and they seem to be limited to a handful of different artists.

All the 5-star rated songs on specific albums by specific artists are affected, but not all albums by specific artists are affected, if that makes sense. As an example, if an artist has 5 albums, all the 5-star songs on 3 of those albums will be constantly synced, the 5-star songs on the other 2 albums will not be.

Steps I have tried to fix the issue:

1. Someone on another thread suggested it might be due to the new custom lyrics feature. I don't have lyrics on my songs, but I ran a VBS script to strip lyrics from all songs anyways, to no avail.

2. I have also removed the offending songs from iTunes altogether and re-added them, to no avail.

3. I deleted my smart playlist and recreated it, to no avail.

4. Did a factory reset/erase of my iPod Nano, to no avail.

Not really sure what else to try as this issue never happened prior to iTunes 12.5.

That does work. The problem is, it works as long as that "work" field (old grouping field) is blank. If you re-add a value, your songs resync again. In fact, I've tried the entire variety of possibilities, and it just boils down to, if there's a value in that Old-Grouping-New-Work field, it resyncs every time. If it's blank, it doesn't.

The good news, I think, is that that means that anyone who is using this feature for classical music will have the same problem, so hopefully Apple will deign to fix it.

But if you are relying on that Old-Grouping-New-Work field to convey information from a third party MP3 editor (like JackPanama and I do), you're screwed until then.

The (sorta) good news right now is that there is still the same old "grouping" tag in iTunes that you can fill in once the songs have been added to iTunes. Stinks that you can't add that data from 3rd party encoders for now, but it's a small price to pay until there's a fix.

Again, thanks to all for helping us find a solution to the syncing issue.

That's true, but to be clear for anyone reading: anything that was in the 'Grouping' tag referenced by a third party will be in both the 'Grouping' and 'Work Name' tag in iTunes. HOWEVER, updating from the third party appppp no longer updates the Grouping tag. It updates the Work Name tag. So as long as you aren't changing anything, you're good to go.

I'm having the same problem. The same batch of 30-36 songs always get re-synced whenever I sync my iPhone 6 (iOS 10.2) with iTunes 12.5.4.42. I tried removing all the songs from my iPhone via iTunes (unchecked "Sync Music", synced, and re-checked "Sync Music") and I tried checking the "Use work and movement" option for all of my songs, and the unchecking it, and then syncing, but neither solution worked. In fact, the amount of songs that re-synced increased from 30 to 36!

Not sure what else I'll do at this point. I think I'll eventually go on to remove my iTunes library and restore it again, and maybe remove the songs from my iPhone itself. I don't want to have to figure out the batch of 36 songs that refuse to sync normally... that'll require me to record my screen. I shouldn't have to do this, Apple! Please give us the option to generate a text change log with every sync.

About the group of songs that keep syncing: none of them have custom lyrics or any lyrics at all (the lyrics box is always unchecked because I never bother with song lyrics for any of my songs), and they're all encoded differently. Some of them in iTunes, other in LAME (LAME3.92 to 3.99). All of them are id3 2.3, and all of them have album art (different sizes).

Since I can't edit my post more than once, I'm replying to it.

So, the songs that are constantly re-syncing all have "Grouping" tags associated with them, which I added myself. Yet the "work and movement" trick didn't work for them, which is weird. I added info to the "Grouping" field in iTunes, not through any third-party program, so I don't know what the issue is.

I figured out the issue! It's the "Work" tag after all!

So the "work and movement" grouping tag was messing up the metadata of some of my songs. This included 31 of the songs that always re-synced--I had to choose the "Use work and movement" tag for them, and then I had to enter a backspace where the "Work" field was. They stopped syncing after that! All of the songs had filled "work" fields. I removed them.

For four other songs, I had to choose "Use work and movement" for them as well, but in the title field ("Work") there was a ??? instead of a title. I simply entered a backspace in the "Work" field after mass selecting all four, and they too stopped syncing!

The 36th song I fixed by creating a new version of the MP3--removed all properties and imported it into iTunes, and then manually added back the metadata. But that was before I figured out the easy solution. I spent a good two hours combing through my songs in foobar, trying to figure out which tag was causing issues. Turns out it was iTunes after all.

The songs don't need to be grouped, but I liked having them grouped. It's a shame that iTunes is forcing me to remove the grouping tags. 😢

You can still use the Grouping field. I've cleared out the info Itunes added to the Work field to get it to stop re-syncing the same songs, but I still have my Grouping info. The only problem is that Itunes copies the Grouping info back into the Work field again if you make other changes, and then those song will re-sync every time again, until you clear out the Work field again. It's ridiculous.

For now, I created a smart playlist where Work is not blank. Every time a bunch of songs start resyncing - which is every couple of days lately - I go into that playlist, click on the Work field of each song individually to clear the info.

I had three songs that would not allow me to change or clear the Work field on them. I think it's because they were aac audio files. After I created mp3 copies and deleted the aac copies, I could clear out the Work fields on them and they stopped re-syncing.

Even if Itunes assumes we want the Grouping info in the Work field, why should that make it copy the same songs every time you sync? That's totally glitchy.
