Iphoto 9.6.1 with OS X El capitan 10.11.6 incompatible?

I have an "outdated" iMac 2009. Since I did my last update,my iPhoto doesn't work anymore. All my iPhoto library is on an external hard drive (70 GO). Now, is there anyway I can still use iPhoto? if not, how do I transfer my iPhoto library to Photo? and make Photo my default software to manage my pix?

I tried to copy my iPhoto library from my external hard drive to my iMac. here's the error msg I got:impossible to copy "iPhoto library" its name is identical to an element in the destination volume and this volume doesn't make the difference between upper case and lower case in file names. I tried to change the name of iPhoto library to something else, and got the same error message. When I try to repair the permissions and database, but I can't vent get access as I get the same error msg from my original post. Now I see only 2 options left: delete my iPhoto app & re-install it. problem with that is to find iPhoto in the app store (help needed here!) Or 2nd option go to time machine and retire my Mac back when iphot was working fine (before I did my upgrade to OS X El capitan) What do you guys think? Any other options? If iPhoto 9.6.1 is working fine with El Capitan 10.11.6, I'd prefer to stay with iPhoto instead of switching to photo... tks.
