Should I update to Mac Os Sierra from Mavericks?

So I have an Early 2013 Macbook Pro 13" with a 2.6GHz i5, 8gb Ram and 256gb ssd. I'm currently running 10.9.5 and it's really stable, however it's getting a bit out of date. I want to update but I'm afraid there will be problem after I update. Should I update straight to Mac Os Sierra, Osx El Capitan, or just stay on Maverick?

MacBook, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I did this upgrade from Mavericks to Sierra because one of my apps would no longer work on Mavericks. Now I can't access my email from Hostgator and it won't install properly in the mail app. I also keep getting a strange login keychain message popup with a bunch of numbers. On top of all that, I can't login to icloud.

This upgrade is a massive mess. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was running Mavericks on my 2013 27"iMac and upgraded to El Capitan because I had it on a previous system. I didn't want to do it, but Mavericks was starting to lag and there are newer features that I appreciate with the upgrade.

I have a 2015 MBP 15" and had been running El Capitan and although I like Mavericks dock, there are other features that far outweigh the visual pleasure of the dock. I got over it. Good Luck.

If you do not have a compelling need today, then consider making a backup (2 with 2 backup utilities would be safer), then create a 30-50GB partition, and install Sierra on the test partition.

This will do 2 things, it will let you test Sierra without committing to Sierra, and it will put Sierra in your App Store -> Purchases tab, so you will be able to download it again even after Apple releases the next major macOS upgrade.

You should always do at least one download and "Quit" whenever Apple releases a new major macOS. If you had done that in the past, you could be choosing between Yosemite, El Capitan or Sierra, and not just staying with Mavericks or upgrade to Sierra. You can delete the installer in the Applications folder after it is downloaded to save space.
