iPad rotation bug in iOS 10

SInce iOS 10.0, my iPad Air 2 gets stuck in landscape mode from time to time and there is no way to rotate except a reboot. This seems to be a bug in iOS 10 that needs to be addressed.

Hi. There are a couple of suggestions here Re: Screen rotation not working but they may have stopped working with the iOS 10.2 update. It should always be fixed by restarting (power off and back on, not just sleep). According to multiple users, the rotation locking happens randomly, and only affects iPad Air 2. I suspect there's a bug in the firmware for the M8 motion coprocessor, or in the interface between it and generic iOS code. You're the 49th different poster with this problem since iOS 10.1.1 came out.

Brand new Air 2 32gb. Reported. This happens pretty frequently Here, though not terribly many apps yet (first/only iPad, still heavy Mba pro user). May well be Safari or web triggered issue, but given that it often isn't resolved by soft-boot with power switch as described by others that isn't certain. I suspect some hardware issues on my device; it's orientation responsiveness varies wildly... sometimes it flips on slightest tilt, other times you need to whack it against your palm. So ymmv.

Running iOS 10.2.1 on iPad Air 2 wifi/4g 64GB

What I do to come about this error on my air 2, and I have the error right now while typing.., is to start an app that forces the iPad into landscape mode. I normally get the lock in the horizontal mode, after iBooks was left open in horizontal mode and iPad was entering sleep. Open ipad again and the problem emerge.

Then start e.g. Garage Band as this app forces iPad to change to landscape mode. Now lock the rotation and switch to a browser or what ever next you need to start....

It is not solving the auto rotate..., for that I need to restart the iPad pad, but at least I can change from horizontal to landscape mode fast, without having to wait for a restart

I just posted this in the thread Diana suggested above (screen rotation not working). I followed her suggestion there and installed a free clinometer app (Rotating Sphere Clinometer). I turned it on just to check the app out, used it for perhaps a couple of minutes and turned it off. Since then the bug is gone. I'll delete the app and report should the bug returns. Thanks a million...

I have the same issue. I filed a bug report with Apple, but this is taking forever to fix. This was an issue with 10, 10.1, 10.2, and 10.2.1. It's a pretty obvious bug. Sometimes it's recommended that you not upgrade from 9 to 10 right away, but this thing has been around for months now. It's about time they fix it. It happens to me almost weekly and at the most pain in the butt times, like when watching a movie or reading something. Come on Apple, fix this bug.

I've had the same issue with my IPad since the update, nothing but rebooting it has worked so far, so I gave this suggestion a shot (turning off Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion) and it worked immediately! My screen rotated to portrait mode at once and hasn't gotten stuck since! (However, it's only been 10 minutes). Hopefully this continues to do the trick mor me? Thanks!

Hi guys. Sounds like you both have the same hardware/software configuration, but different results. I wonder if it could be the way you updated iOS 10.3.2. Did you update using WiFi, and from which previous version? Or did you update using iTunes on a computer? The computer update is like a new installation; a complete fresh copy of the system is loaded to the iPad. The OTA update is a lot more complicated, merging new elements with your prior system.

I think so. You could back it up, restore it using iOS 10.3.2, then restore the backup, but that's a bit of a business.

On the bright side, this may be a clue. There may be something left over from 10.1.1, when this first popped up, that's not being replaced by the incremental OTA updates, but that is actually corrected in the current full download. Time will tell. And this could be completely wrong, too.
