Our son's iPhone 5s was damaged by water (he was pushed into a swimming pool with the phone in his pocket). 😟
I understand that this would not be covered by warranty.
What I am trying to learn about, however, is if Apple still has a buy-back program for damaged iPhones and how to learn more of this. There are several mentions on the web of a program in which Apple recycles damaged phones like this.
Could somebody let me know more details?

If you decide to sell it, go into iCloud and "Find my Phone" and remove the device.
Also, if the phone still works, go into Settings > General > Reset and tell it to remove all data. If you cannot perform this step the phone should be destroyed.

No, they don't buy them back. You can buy an out of warranty replacement for it from Apple. They will be happy to recycle it for you, but they are not going to pay you for a water damaged phone.
