10.3 Sierra fresh install crashing

Hey guys,

I know I've already posted about FCPX 10.3 crashing on El Capitan.

I've tried installing a fresh copy of Sierra and work on that, maybe it won't crash.

Surprisingly, I'm having the exact same issues.

I was editing and all of a sudden the beachball was there, the system was not responding to anything else.

I tried opening Activity Monitor to see which app is not responding, but it wouldn't start. It would just bounce in the dock.

I've force quit FCPX and Activity Monitor. Tried to reopen FCPX or AM, still bouncing in the dock forever.

Tried to restart, it goes to a black screen with the mouse cursor on, nothing happens. I had to hard reset.

Something's wrong with this version. Do you guys get this problem?

El Capitan was on my internal SSD which had 50gb's free space. This one was having this problem and a whole lot of others, like system freeze then kernel panic.

So I've installed a new fresh copy of Sierra on a 2TB rotational HDD. This one has 1.9 TB free space.

My media and libraries are stored on a Raid5 Pegasus R4, thunderbolt.

Here's my Etrecheck result.

It is worth pointing out that doing a clean install and immediately importing everything basically undoes the purpose of clean installing. For troubleshooting one should only install what is needed (say, FCP X in this case) and test for a while before migrating stuff back.

You have uTorrent, Spotify, and Steam on your list of Login Items - which means every time you login these programs are running - and you may not even notice it.

I suggest you remove those from your list of login items, restart and try running for a while without them.

"FCPX should work properly with other stuff installed no matter what."

That's pretty ridiculous. FCP has no control over whatever other garbage your software puts on the system and reconfigures on the system and completely hoses on your system. There is a ton of really crappy software out there. Thousands of professionals are using this software around the world every day and are not seeing the problems you're seeing.

Nov 7, 2016 8:19 AM in response to Tom Wolsky

Alright, let's say it's ridiculous. Is one supposed to have a system that only has FCPX installed in order for it to work properly? This sounds pretty ridiculous too. Right?

These kinds of problems were only happening in windows when various crappy software were conflicting. This never happened to me on OSX with any other NLE software.

We all know there's a ton of crappy software out there and I don't think I'm installing loads of crap that slows down my system. More than that, it's not about slowing down either. I'm getting kernel panics and hangs on a freshly installed OS.

As of my knowledge, FCPX 10.3 is made to work best with Sierra. So let's get to the core of the problem without trying to find out if I'm installing other software that may interfere because that's not the case.

Nov 7, 2016 8:47 AM in response to Tom Wolsky

Tom, this is a fresh Sierra install that I've done two days ago. I've only installed the basic things that I need. The Etrecheck report is above and it includes all the connected peripherals and all the system specs.

I'll write them again :

Mac Pro 2013, my library is on a Raid5 Pegasus R4 connected through thunderbolt.

It's extremely weird because once FCPX crashes, the whole system stops responding to basic tasks, like opening up Activity Monitor.

Nov 7, 2016 9:10 AM in response to Tom Wolsky

Yes, the application is on my system drive.

I've just trashed the preferences. I've tried closing other running software before without any results. Will continue working to see if it crashes again.

I don't really think this will solve the problem, because it was also doing the same thing under my old El Capitan install. Didn't get any kernel panics in Sierra yet. I have to mention that these things are only happening under FCPX.

What hardware problem could it be? I've done a hardware test and it didn't find any problem.
