i tried 6 passcodes which were all wrong so my old phone is locked it said connect to itunes but it couldnt link to my phone because it is locked. it gave me options to erase content but i dont want to erase anything. is there security questions i can answer to prove its my phone and reset my passcode?

No, even if you answer security questions, it will not enable you to retrieve your passcode or enter your iPhone.
I had the same issue with my iPad. Am so sorry to tell you this but sadly there is no way to unlock your phone without the passcode unless you erase everything you have on it (including the password) with iTunes recovery mode. I know that it's so frustrating not having the choice of answer a security question but we can't do anything about it. Sorry dude.

I am actually very grateful there is no way to unlock the iPhone without the passcode unless you erase it ...
If there were a way, it would mean that someone else (perhaps a thief) could unlock my iPhone and retrieve its contents. That would be undesirable. Why bother having a passcode in this scenario?
