Hi - Is there any way to get the Finder to automatically show the entire file name in list/column views instead of (for the most part) truncating them?
Would also help in the open/save dialogues too.

I know about the drag/double click option/s, it's the 'automatically' part of my original question that needs answering.
I'd like to see the whole file name straight away without having to do that.
Resize the column with the file name by dragging the bottom of the column by the two vertical lines…
I agree, there needs to be a setting to address this annoying habit that the Finder has in Column View. When searching/browsing files I spend easily one-half my time adjusting the column width or hovering waiting for the full file name to appear.
This tip, near the bottom of the article, seems to help. It appears to give a one-size fits all for column width, which should help, but takes up a lot of real estate on the screen if set too wide.

I have found that the column width setting is remembered on a per folder setting, but not universally across all folders.
I selected a folder with long PDF names in it, and widened the name column. I then brought up the Show View Options panel via command+J, and selected the Use as Defaults button. Optionally, I force quit and restarted the Finder, and when the particular folder was viewed again in list mode, the width was remembered.
I missed the "automatically". Not as far as I know there isn't.
FWIW, I learned something since last year, dbl-click at the bottom of a column and it will resize to the longest file name.
Yes, I read your comment about that option earlier in the thread. It is useful, but I sure wish they could get it to just read the necessary column width and set it automatically on the fly.
