macbook pro does not recognise a Garmin device, despite garmin app
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)
Their software indicates a Mac running v10.5 Leopard or later > http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?product=999-99999-27
Even though it states, "or later", doesn't necessarily mean it's compatible with the currently installed OS X on your Mac.

By the way, to avoid malware, make sure Gatekeeper is enabled on your Mac.
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy then select the General tab.
Make sure Mac App Store and identified developers is selected. If that area is grayed out, click the padlock icon to proceed.
