Using Hotmail on Macbook Air

How can I configure Mac Mail to either delete Hotmail on the server after I've put it in the Trash in Mail or at least to stop downloading it again to my laptop? Seems I should not have to delete it twice on the same device, even if it stays on the server.

Go to Mail > Preference > Accounts

Uncheck "Store deleted messages on the server"

If your Hotmail account is still somehow a POP account, you may have to log into your account using a web browser and change these settings with Hotmail/Outlook.
