HDCP Protection Error

This may help other users, though I'm not sure about your specific problem.

I saw the same error yesterday when I knew full well that the day before I had watched shows on my MacPro 5,1 and LED Cinema display. Since nothing had changed at all (no software updates, nothing), I was mystified... even rebooting did not solve the problem.

Eventually I brought up the Displays section in System Preferences and selected "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available". Looking under that menu bar item I noticed that my MacBook Pro 17 showed up. I had used it to access the MacPro via screen sharing. I have to assume that iTunes on the MacPro was still thinking that screen sharing was in use and I was trying to play video from the MacBook Pro. When I punted the MBP from the mirroring options, everything went back to normal.

Of course, it's odd that the MBP still appeared to be connected even after rebooting the MacPro...

I'm getting the same thing when I have all the required hardware and software for running HD videos on my computer. It's getting pretty frustrating.....

I'm trying to watch a movie I just bought in the iTunes store on my Macbook Pro Retina 15-inch Late 2013 running OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6 with Intel Iris Pro 1536 mb graphics. I tried changing my display settings to 1900x1200px but I'm still receiving the same "This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)" when I try to play this movie...and any other movie from itunes...on this laptop.

Help?

Sorry if this is late in coming. It may not be a hardware problem, but the browser wars. You don't mention which you're using. I had similar problems with Amazon and found changing my browser was the solution - both Chrome and Opera (now my favourite) worked when Safari did not.

A much older display or one that connects using VGA would not have it. I used to have an old (but nice) CRT display connected to my Mac using VGA. I could not play HD videos (same message) purchased from iTunes Store (no problem with HD video podcasts - no DRM). I seem to recall that all SD videos played fine. When I bought an HP display (connected digitally), there was no longer any problem with playing HD content with DRM."

I just received my brand new Late 2016 MacBook Pro with TouchBar... And now I am getting this error when trying to view Amazon Prime content!

NOT external monitor; NOT projector — just on the MacBook screen. No external devices connected.

The cretins at Apple appear to have ruined my Amazon Prime membership.

So much for the long dead myth that Apple stuff "just works"...

PS: I also tried the following, which were unsuccessful in remedying the issue:

• Uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes

• Restarting my computer

• Downloading the movie to my local hard drive
