Ah, OK then, that was not what I was thinking of at all!
If you are being asked for a password when trying to open Classic, it sounds like a permissions problem. Are you logged in as an administrator? It is not always a good idea to work as admin - better to work as standard user. However if the permissions are not correct that could stop a standard user from opening Classic. Also, are you a managed user, it is possible to set restrictions on an account which would prevent you from opening Classic.
You could try repairing OS 9 permissions. You can find Apple's instructions for doing this by following

Try these, if they do not fix it, it may also be worth trying to repair the OS X permissions too, to ensure that True Blue environment (the OS X component which runs Classic) can operate correctly.
