My screen saver always starts after 20 minutes os x 10.10.5

My screen saver always starts after 20 minutes. I had it set to 1hr for as far back as I can remember yet something changed. I cannot change its behavior. I've tried setting it to 1min or changed it to a completely different screen saver. The new screen saver will run after 20 minutes. I've gone into the energy saver setting which I have set to never turn off the display. I changed it to 3hr and back to never. I just cannot change the time parameter of the screen saver to anything other than 20min. Thanks.

If the above doesn't work, try the System Preferences .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
