Someone showed me how to do this but I can't remember now. It went something like: clicking the first message in the line of messages you want to delete and then the last in that line........and then a command set of keys that deletes those two and all the messages in between, rather than one at a time.

Hold down the Shift key then select each item then right or control click then click Delete or use the Command + A keyboard shortcut.
Or hold down the Shift while selecting multiple emails then go to the Mail menu bar, click Edit > Delete All.
Click the first e-mail and then while holding down the shift key, click the last e-mail. To select multiple e-mails that aren't next to each other hold down the command key while clicking.
