Hi, Doctor9fan,
Thank you very much for your reply, I have an update!!
I've questioned my Son (the original owner) about the iphone5 password etc.
Being that he is part of what I call 'the spoilt generation' (always has the newest iphone model etc)
I've been met with the usual "grunts" of 'can't remember', don't know', 'can't be bothered' sort of answers.
He was quite content with his toddlers playing with this old iphone5, before I asked him if I could have it !!!
Anyway,
I'll answer your questions first,,
1. still an NTL (now Virginmedia) customer? NO
2. remember secret question answers? I daren't ask him about it again.
3. What happens if you choose 'forgot Apple ID'? I think it referred me back to secret questions.
I tried countless times to guess my Son's password etc & pretty much gave up,
BUT I was able to remove (delete) the email addresses that I'd only just entered into 'email setup'
AND ALONG WITH THEM I was able to delete the NTL address in the email settings section of settings.
Then I tried (again) the 'reset+loose files' option in settings.
I'm sure I'd tried this before,, (only to be confronted with the password problem),, however,, this time the phone asked me to confirm, then went into a resetting sequence.
On reboot the phone displayed 'Hello', set English + UK + wifi,, then asked me to insert SIM card.
I am hopeful that the iphone has reset itself to factory defaults and won't 'remember' it's ties with NTL !!! ???
What do you think ??
My existing iphone 4 has a micro SIM number (on giffgaff) which I will swap onto a nano SIM if I ever get the 5brick freed-up. (free nano sim ordered from giffgaff today)
In the meantime I tried cutting a spare giffgaff micro to fit. It seemed to work because I am now has a display reading 'SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported'
(+The same message appears when iphone USB connected to PC itunes)
I always realised that I'll have to get the iphone5 unlocked for giffgaff use (when the nano arrives) but I'm not sure if (somehow) I've managed to free the iphone of NTL, or whether the NTL monster will raise it's ugly head again, LOL, once the phone connects to network.
It would be annoying to pay for phone unlocking and then face the NTL password again !!
If this fails me, I've promised to return the 'brick' to my 2 year old grandsons to play with !!
What a waste that would be !!
BIG Thanks for giving me your time & efforts with my problem.
ps: so, a big 'IF', the NTL email deletion from the email settings has actually removed the need of the NTL password, then maybe I've stumbled onto something ?
ie, adding extra email accounts to the settings, then deleting them, enables ALL email accounts listed to be deleted !!! Sounds a bit too good & easy to be true !!
