iphone5 reset problem NTLWORLD email not valid

iphone5 reset problem due to old email address without password.

User uploaded file

Hi,

I'm a newby and not very clued up on iphones, be gentle with me please. (& I'm also slow at typing)

IPHONE 5.

(passed to me from family member)

The phone has an icloud account and has ‘find my iphone’ switched ON.

The email address used to set-up icloud was #name#@ntlworld.com

I need to remove this icloud account and reset the iphone.

BUT,,,,

When I try to log in with the Apple ID for #name#@ntlworld.com (as icloud request)

I am then asked for the password.

We cannot remember it ! ,,,,,, (it's been years & NTLworld don't exist anymore)

So I follow instructions from ‘appleid.apple.com’ to ‘iforgot.apple.com’

There I’m told the email address is NOT an Apple ID !! *** ??

1, icloud on the iphone says the email address is #name#@ntlworld.com

2. Apple ID says the ID is locked and to reset the account on iforgot.apple.com

3. iforgot.apple.com say the email address is not an Apple ID.

So why does 'appleid.com' say I just need to reset ?

What is going on, I feel Apple are giving me the run-around.

Anyone know a 'work-around' for this rather silly situation ??

I cannot reset the iphone with the 'find my iphone' and icloud still active,, unless you can tell me how ???

thanks for reading.

Hi, Doctor9fan,

Thank you very much for your reply, I have an update!!

I've questioned my Son (the original owner) about the iphone5 password etc.

Being that he is part of what I call 'the spoilt generation' (always has the newest iphone model etc)

I've been met with the usual "grunts" of 'can't remember', don't know', 'can't be bothered' sort of answers.

He was quite content with his toddlers playing with this old iphone5, before I asked him if I could have it !!!

Anyway,

I'll answer your questions first,,

1. still an NTL (now Virginmedia) customer? NO

2. remember secret question answers? I daren't ask him about it again.

3. What happens if you choose 'forgot Apple ID'? I think it referred me back to secret questions.

I tried countless times to guess my Son's password etc & pretty much gave up,

BUT I was able to remove (delete) the email addresses that I'd only just entered into 'email setup'

AND ALONG WITH THEM I was able to delete the NTL address in the email settings section of settings.

Then I tried (again) the 'reset+loose files' option in settings.

I'm sure I'd tried this before,, (only to be confronted with the password problem),, however,, this time the phone asked me to confirm, then went into a resetting sequence.

On reboot the phone displayed 'Hello', set English + UK + wifi,, then asked me to insert SIM card.

I am hopeful that the iphone has reset itself to factory defaults and won't 'remember' it's ties with NTL !!! ???

What do you think ??

My existing iphone 4 has a micro SIM number (on giffgaff) which I will swap onto a nano SIM if I ever get the 5brick freed-up. (free nano sim ordered from giffgaff today)

In the meantime I tried cutting a spare giffgaff micro to fit. It seemed to work because I am now has a display reading 'SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported'

(+The same message appears when iphone USB connected to PC itunes)

I always realised that I'll have to get the iphone5 unlocked for giffgaff use (when the nano arrives) but I'm not sure if (somehow) I've managed to free the iphone of NTL, or whether the NTL monster will raise it's ugly head again, LOL, once the phone connects to network.

It would be annoying to pay for phone unlocking and then face the NTL password again !!

If this fails me, I've promised to return the 'brick' to my 2 year old grandsons to play with !!

What a waste that would be !!

BIG Thanks for giving me your time & efforts with my problem.

ps: so, a big 'IF', the NTL email deletion from the email settings has actually removed the need of the NTL password, then maybe I've stumbled onto something ?

ie, adding extra email accounts to the settings, then deleting them, enables ALL email accounts listed to be deleted !!! Sounds a bit too good & easy to be true !!User uploaded file

As you're no longer a Virginmedia customer then you've lost access to the account, accounts are usually closed within a few months of leaving, however this does not stop you from using the address as an Apple ID.

IF you can connect the device to wifi & set it up OK with your/another Apple ID &account password then the original account's password wasn't the activation lock of the account so you should be OK. I think you can skip the SIM card setting up. You'll have to ask the supplier of the iPhone (Virginmedia) to unlock it, as you're no longer a customer then there might be a problem unless they'll do that for payg members &, if so, it might be only after so many months of being a customer.

I will try to get more information on that.

MANY THANKS

Thank you Doctor9fan & DCDavidA1 for your interest in my problem,

which, I think, is now resolved.

I couldn't reset the phone because every move I made was blocked by a need to input

the password for the phones 'NTLworld-appleID'.

I couldn't,, reset all settings / erase all content and reset / remove find my iphone or

delete the mail account or delete the icloud account. etc.

Everywhere I tried, I was blocked because I needed the password.

Facing defeat,,,,

I decided to remove the (newly added) mail accounts that I had added in the setting, mail, section.

I deleted each mail address in turn, until just the NTL one remained. I noticed the 'delete' option was

still bold, so I hit it !!! ,,, & the NTLworld disappeared !!!!

Next I was free to do a, 'erase all content and reset'.

Update: Today I spent a huge £1 on a Virgin nano sim card which has enabled me to progress past

the 'sim not supported' page.

Now I have full access to the phone and have set the AppleID to my own & have sent messages

via wifi etc, etc. So the iphone is free of it's NTL tie.

I've just got to get the phone unlocked, then I'll be able to get my Giffgaff number swapped etc etc.

So, I don't know, but it seems to me that by ADDING mail accounts, then REMOVING them,

enabled me to delete the offending, original NTL account WITHOUT needing it's password !!??

Whatever happened, it worked. YIPPEE !!

I'm expecting to get unlocked very soon, I understand it should be easier than ever before,
