iPhone 7 Plus display dingier than iPhone 6 Plus display

I just upgraded from an iPhone 6 Plus to an iPhone 7 Plus. The first thing I noticed was that the display on the iPhone 7 Plus seems to be "dingier" than that of the iPhone 6 Plus. It's not as bright for the same setting. At maximum setting the iPhone 6 Plus is noticeably brighter, and whiter.

I thought the iPhone 7 Plus was supposed to be brighter than the iPhone 6 Plus. Is there something wrong with my new iPhone do you think?

All the settings are, I believe, the same. I restored from a backup of my iPhone 6 Plus I saved in iTunes this morning.

Hi, Doug.

I have the same problem as yours, though im not yet exchanging it until i heard more from apple and the feedback you are getting from them.

Here in the Philippines, we dont have the 7 days return and replacement policy, that we need to go to a premium service center to have the unit diagnosed, and wait for a couple of days before the feedback.

What more disappointing is that Apple doesnt seem to act with all these reports and remain mum on the issue - they are not actually releasing any statements about this as of yet and they are not communicating with the people on what proper things should be done.

I think asking help from consumer advocate agencies would help you to get Apples attention on this.

I've seen some iPhone7plus and 7 units that look exactly to what was advertised and im happy for those who got them perfectly but for us, i think we really need to get going to have this case resolved.

I just got mine few days ago and tried to go back to my point of purchase but to no avail, i wasnt able to exchange it to a brand new fresh from the box.

Hope to hear from you soon on the developments of this discussion. Good day!

Regards,

Esmi from Philippines

It's been 5 days since I last heard back from Apple. I sent an email just before to the liaison who had been in contact with me asking what she found out.

If they don't help me of course I will go to the Japan Consumer Affairs Agency. But I'm hoping they will just find a replacement unit that is as advertised, exchange it, and that would resolve it.

I will definitely keep people posted here as things develop.

Here's the latest update. I just got a call from the Apple liaison and it seems they frankly don't know what the problem is.

The same sorts of ideas seem to be floating around the engineering team there. The "glue drying" that some people have talked about. But that has largely been discounted. The best operating theory is that the backlight LED is just "off" somehow. I think there is a manufacturing quality control issue going on, because when I was in the Apple Store Ginza on Friday I saw some units that were clearly brighter than other units under the exact same lighting and setting conditions.

So it seems that some units are, for some unknown reason, just dimmer and some are brighter.

Anyway, they are sending me an exchange unit that is a new construction to see if that fixes it.

The exchange system is different in different countries. Here in Japan it is especially easy. They send the new unit by courier. The courier stands at the door waiting while you give him back your old unit and you're done.

So I just need to backup my current iPhone and wait for the new one to come, pop out my SIM card and then put it in the new one and restore.

I'll report back after this is done as to whether this helps.

Well, my replacement iPhone 7 Plus was delivered this afternoon. This time instead of immediately taking back the old iPhone 7 Plus they just left the new one and I need to make arrangements for Apple to pick up my old one.

This gave me an opportunity to compare all three iPhones: the iPhone 6 Plus, the original iPhone 7 Plus and the replacement iPhone 7 Plus.

It's not really clear to me which iPhone 7 Plus is better. Sometimes it seems that one is better, and sometimes it seems the other is better - depending on what I'm looking at. For example, I think the Settings panel looks brighter on the old iPhone 7 Plus while the home screen looks brighter on the new iPhone 7 Plus. The iPhone 6 Plus does remain clearly brighter in all cases though. What do you think?

One difficulty in judging is compounded by the fact that the photos I took with my iPad Air are not really what you see with the naked eye, because of camera exposure.

If you would like to look at the photos I just took, I put them up on Google Photos (click the link below). When there are three iPhones visible they are, from left to right, (1) iPhone 6 Plus, (2) the new iPhone 7 Plus, (3) the original iPhone 7 Plus. When there are just two iPhones visible they are, (1) the new iPhone 7 Plus and (2) the original iPhone 7 Plus.

Any opinions?
