Hitting return twice on Safari!!!

Hi there,

Whenever I want to do a search or enter a URL on Safari, I have to hit the <RETURN> twice for Safari to spring in to action.

Is this a bug or intentional? It's very irritating and I can't for the **** of me, understand why Apple would do this. Occurs on Mac Sierra and occurred on Captain and even before them.

Folks - try disabling AdBlock. I found that when AdBlock is enabled there is an added delay between when entered is pressed and the web page is loaded and/or displayed. My suspicion is AdBlock is a culprit here.

This drove me crazy for over two years! My solution was simple: it appears that I had so many bookmarks that it would take several seconds to iterate through them before it executed the search. In all likelihood, you don't have to hit "enter" twice in order to get Safari to search--it will eventually search, but it will take several seconds, sometimes up to 15 seconds. Once I deleted old bookmarks, Safari would search nearly immediately. I hope this helps!

After reading through and realizing most replies were a bit too unrealistic, I believe the answer to your question is rather simple. You are most likely being forced to enter twice as you are asking the search bar two questions, although you may not realize it. Under Safari -> Preferences use the settings from the image below. Unselect all options under Search, except you can decide to include favorites if you prefer. Restart Safari and see if that helps.

I never had this problem before upgrading to my new MacBook Pro 2016 on El Capitan, Sierra and High Sierra. After enduring this for several months, I've opted for an easier solution. It's called GOOGLE CHROME. Never a problem there and always faster. COME ON APPLE!!!!! Pay less attention to making your hardware thinner and thinner (and more expensive) and focus on issues that loyal users face everyday! Seriously. This Safari bug is absurd. The Apple "cool" factor (i.e. profit) has obviously taken priority over practical use. First Chrome, then Android, then - perish the thought - Windows.

Switching to Chrome is not a solution because you still have the problem if you use Safari. What you've done is to avoid the problem by not using Safari by switching to Chrome!

I'm on High Sierra, still suffering with this problem on Safari, and always (actually, automatically now) hit return twice when doing a search. If I hit return once, it still does my google search, but I have to wait ages (in internet time!!). Double pressing return makes it do it quick, which is what it should be doing.

Apple are %^$%$^&%*& but I'll still use their products and still use crappy Safari.

I am late to answer you, but I have the same problem. Clicking on a link it will freeze as it tries to load. Nothing happens till I click it a second time. I tried everything imaginable, with apple techs, except for reinstalling the OS. That would have created a nightmare to get all my apps back.

Then it came to me. My iMac is hardwired by ethernet cord to my cable modem. So I unplugged that, and tried surfing using the wifi on my imac. Problem solved. Pages load with one click and load fast when using wifi.

The problem lies somewhere in how the signal is being delivered from the Motorola cable modem by ethernet cord to my iMac. Something is getting jammed up. So by disconecting that, and surfing on the iMac using the signal from my Netgear router, it eliminates that jam. I'm heading out to buy a new cable modem right this second. Took me two days, but I finally figured it out myself. I'm smarter than the Apple techs this time. They never suggested I try what I did.

I have the same problem. You may notice that Safari will load the page after a long delay or sometimes not load the page at all. This behavior is ridiculous and I'm shocked that as of this date Apple has not seen or resolved the issue. Clearing caches does not appear to resolve the issue. It appears related to some functionality they've added into the browser update. How things have changed at Apple.

Uncheck the box "Enable Quick Website Search". This allows you to search by only pressing "enter" once but removes the capability to directly search sites:

Seems to be a Safari bug, when I re-enabled "Quick Website Search" it still works properly (pressing "enter" once). I believe turning off "Safari Suggestions" may work as well (can leave "Quick Website Search" on). Suggestions will determine a site you may interested in such as:

Personally, I've decided to keep all "Smart Search" options ON and make it a habit to press "enter" twice.
