How do I get a driver for Hp printer 4650 that will work on OS 10.5.8?
iMac, OS 10.5.8
Look on HP's support website. Locate a driver to download. However, the printer must have a driver available or you may need to upgrade the OS on your computer.
The problem is that my iMac OS cannot be upgraded because it has a power pc chip and not the Intel processer that allows all of the OS upgrades. The current driver for my new printer from the HP website will not install on OS 10.5.8.
Is there a generic driver for HP 4650?
My old iMac is still very reliable.
There's nothing new in this problem. Pretty much nobody is going to support an operating system that age and if you want to keep running a computer that age you should have bought a spare printer 4 years ago. 🙂
Check the Gutenprint web site.
You may find an older HP driver may work with the newer printer but may not offer all features. I was able to eventually find a driver which would work my Brother printer on a G4 with Tiger OS but it was a matter of trial and error which took about an hour of experimentation. It did basic printing which is 98% of what we do with the printer.
You are so right. If only I had hindsight. Gutenprint has nothing so far for this new printer. I installed their latest drivers for my OS today and nothing showed up. Thanks!
I just had to experiment with every printer driver for Bother printers that were similar to my model (monochrome laser). Eventually I found one that had a completely different model number but talked to my printer for basic features.
With the Gutenprint, try Generic PCL driver, Generic postscript, or PDF via memory stick....
