Hard Drive failed in 13inch Macbook Pro mid 2009

Hello All,

I purchased a 13 inch mid-2009 Macbook Pro from my roommate a couple months ago. I know nothing about Macs, so here we go. Apple Store told that my Hard Drive has failed, and I needed a new one. I've been looking online and realized how cheap hard drives can be, plus how easy it is to replace it myself. My old hard drive was not backed up/ does not give a boot drive to login into (pretty much can't access anything past the login screen). I completely forget which operating system I used before. Pretty sure it was Yosimite.

I took a picture of the test results that Apple did

Hardware Specifications:

System Serial Number: W893120W66E

Model Name: Macbook Pro (13inch, mid 2009)

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz

Memory: 4GB (2 DIMMs)

MLB Config (EEE/EEEE): 6 GD

Firmware Specifications:

Boot ROM Version: MBP55.00AC.B03

SMC Version: 1.47f2

Software Specifications:

Mac OS X: Not Found

Last Time Machine Backup: Not Found

My questions are:

1) I do not know what kind of hard drive to buy for my Mac, to ensure it would work.

2) What do I need to do this?

-I know a new HD

-I know 2 screw drivers that fit the size

3) My roommate has no way to find his previous operating systems disks. If I take out and replace the HD, could I hit like option-command-r...or something like that and download a brand new OS online if I connect to the internet?

Everything else on my Mac worked perfectly fine, so a new HD is the only think I need.

Thanks!!

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), I forget which one exactly

1. Any 2.5" SATA HDD OR SSD will be compatible. It will have to be formatted in Disk Utility>Erase to mac OS Extended (Journaled) before installing an OSX.

2. You will need a #00 Phillips and a #6 Toex drivers for the installation.

3. If you do not have the original Leopard OSX disks, you can use this Snow Leopard retail disk:

After the installation, run the Snow Leopard Combo update which will give you an APP store account and the ability to install newer OSX's.

Here is just one selection of 2.5" SATA drives that are available;

The 2.5" represents a size standard in the industry (also called a formfactor) which most computer makers adhere to. Any of the listed SATA hard drives (HHD and solid state drives (SSD) will fit and work in your MBP. There are other vendors as well.

The HGST HDD that you have selected will be compatible.

When you install the new HDD, it must be first formatted via Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

In order to do that you will have to use your original OSX install disks. They were either Leopard or an early version of Snow Leopard. If the former, you will need to upgrade it to Snow Leopard using this disk:

If you already have Snow Leopard install disks, then you will have to run the Snow Leopard combo update:

https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399?locale=en_US

Only then can you install a newer OSX from the App store or your App store account.

Ciao.
