ZBrush MacBook Pro 2016

I need portability, so I am looking at the new MacBook Pro 15".

I need to be able to run ZBrush on the new MacBook Pro. All my software is OSX based so any other laptop is out of the question.

Can anyone advise whether the 2016 MacBook Pro will be able to deal with ZBrush without a struggle?

Thanks

Hi wms44,

I understand you have questions regarding the performance and capability of ZBrush with the new MacBook Pro. While I am unable to tell you how it would perform running this software, I would recommend taking a look at the Highly Recommended Specifications for Mac in the link below. These specifications may help you choose the best system for your needs.

I would also suggest reaching out to Pixologic's support community to see if anyone else has experiencing with this program and the system you are interested in.

yes, as a 3d artist I would advise against all i5 equipped MacBook Pros as well as the entry level i7 2016 Mac Pro as a solution for ZBrush. Like the i5's the entry level i7 is dual core i7 CPU, not a quad core i7. All these system have integrated graphics so GPU accelleraton would be handicapped and all model macs can not have RAM upgraded once the system is ordered so if 16GB RAM can address all your future needs for CAD/3D then consider the 3 more expensive models. Apple's primary focus is on battery life and energy saving and appears to be less concerned with providing raw power for power users who need it. Honestly as a designer who works off both Mac and Windows if you need portability and power right now without breaking the bank you should look into other options before you commit to a current Mac laptop at this time

Thank you both for your advice, much appreciated.

Tthe ZB specs over at Pixologic seem to fit nicely, but from experience I ran ZB on a higher end spec Mac mini but had to give up because the fan was topping out.

I Have a nigh end iMac to do heavier stuff, but needed portability for a selection of apps like ZB.

The new Macbook pro model I have my eye on is:

2.7GHz Processor
512 GB Storage

  • 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor
  • Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
  • 16GB 2133MHz memory
  • 512GB PCIe-based SSD1
  • Radeon Pro 455 with 2GB memory
  • Four Thunderbolt 3 ports
  • Touch Bar and Touch ID

I am concerned about the max memory stopping at 16GB and believe we will have to wait until March 2017 for anything more expansive. there are also options to increase 2.7GHz quad-core to 2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz and upping the GC to Radeon Pro 460 with 4GB memory.

My other concern is the Radeon. I wonder if they will consider the NVidia for March 2017 release. Although I'm not planning on carrying out any major 3D work on the MacBook Pro I believe the NVidia cards work best for 3D projects.

I Keep wondering about a PC laptop, but I hate windows with a vengeance. I'm going to hang fire for a bit just to see what everyone says about the new MacBook Pro. I've all ready heard that the lately released 13" non touch bar version is having issues with WiFi and USB C when using together.

Thanks again

MArk

as a user very interested in CUDA and Iray I wonder the same thing but with the history of Apple and Nvidia I would be surprise to see a Nvidia solution from Apple anytime soon.

In the mean time check out Bizon and Wolfe who are kickstarting Nvidia GPU's for mac through the Thunderbolt port. It comes with a premium but you can stick a Titan X on your mac though it wont be very portable with the HW required to do it.

Bison and Wolfe very interesting Jimmy. Just popped over to Kickstarter to take a look and the project is cancelled.

I'm sure I read somehere that Mac were looking at NVidia and were hoping to include in MacBook Pro 2016, but it fell through. Or perhaps I was dreaming.

Oh well, I'm just looking forward to the YouTube reviews dribbling through.
