What happens if you charge a water damaged iPhone?

I am just curious to know what happens if you charge say an iPhone 4S after it was just water damaged. I just want to know if it is safe to charge or if it will blow up or something. If it stopped working, that is fine I have warranty that covers this, but I just want to make sure that the phone does not blow up or set a short circuit and set something on fire. I do not want to take any risks or anything. It is an iPhone 4S running iOS 9.3.5, it has 32GB of sotrage, and an 32 bit A5 chip. Please let me know if it is safe to charge or not, and if it is safe to charge or not whilst there is still water in the phone.

Hi

Do not try to turn on, use or charge your iPhone whilst moisture may be present.

Contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available) or make a Genius Bar reservation to have your iPhone checked and to establish your available service options, timescales and cost.
