windows 10 computer & Apple TV

Trying to find out if I can use a wireless connection with the following:

  • Windows 10 computer
  • Apple TV 3rd generation
  • large LCD display with HDMI input
  • no wifi network available in the building

I can't find any details anywhere about using a windows computer with Apple TV.

If this can't be done with Apple TV whats the alternative?

Tried the cheap HDMI wifi dongle things that plug directly in to the display with unusable results.

Thanks.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

What do you mean by wireless connection? What is it your trying to do?

The latest Apple TV doesnt need a computer to be connected, it makes a direct connection to Apple to playback purchased content/Apple Music or Apps.

It is possible to play music on PC and Macs using the Apple TV, as long as they are connected togeather, either hardwired or using wifi. The Apple TV can be used on Wifi and Ethernet cable.

Are you saying you want to play content from your PC to the Apple TV?? If so connect them using Ethernet or Wifi and use the Computers app on the Apple TV - it will walk you through the setup

We want to show anything shown on the computer to be shown on the large display using Apple TV as a wireless connection.

Then please explain or link to a reference on how this is done, there is no "walk us through setup" when we try.

To set up home sharing on both devices (settings > accounts on the Apple TV 4 and settings > computers on previous Apple TV's, the settings for homesharing on the computer are at iTunes > File (menu) > Homesharing > Turn on...). The ID you use for home sharing doesn't need to be the same as the one you use for iTunes, but it has to be real and the same on both devices.

if you are sharing video over itunes to apple tv you can only show purchased video that bought in iTunes in the category video on apple TV. Otherwise if a video has been tagged as a "home movie" or "home video" (I can't remember which) it will show in that category wether or not it was purchased from Apple.

If you use a service like DisneyNow where you purchase movies to use on multiple devices the movies will be shown in the purchased movie section of your Apple TV GUI.

If you are talking about movie files on your PC, you will need to make sure they are in the correct format and in iTunes. you can play your own video files as movies or home video (it wholly depends on how you tag them).

If you are talking about photos, you need to set them up in iTunes, but if you are talking about files in general, you can't display them on the Apple TV unless you turn them into a photo or other compatible file.

There are some third party software solutions for mirroring a PC display to an Apple TV, but they are quite awful and I really think you'd simply be better with an appropriate cable rather than an Apple TV.
