export with iMovie 10 for movie screen

I am working with iMovie 10. I have to export my projects to be played on a large movie screen. the video is all gopro, I'm not sure how to tell if its 1080 or not, I used the gopro app to transfer it into files that imovie can use, the files are pretty big so I think it is, its certainly HD. What settings should I use to export it for the best possible quality on a big movie screen sized screen? Thanks!

Hi,

You need to know the resolution output of the projector that you are going to use, and then match your movie resolution to that. If you send a high resolution movie to a low resolution projector the results will not be optimum because the projector will scale down your movie to fit its own resolution. I am no expert in this area so can't comment in depth. Here's a link to a commercial website I found that discusses the issue. You might find some helpful info there:

I use the free app "Videospec" to check details of video clips. You drag the clip onto the app window. It appears to be no longer in development but you can still download it at:

http://videospec.free.fr/english/index.html

and it still works fine under Sierra.

Having said that, when you share to file in iMovie 10, if it offers a resolution setting of 1080p then the original must have been 1080p (or higher). (Note that the project resolution is set by that of the first clip put in the project timeline. If that was of lower resolution (or a still) you may not get the 1080p option even if later clips are 1080p.)

Geoff.
