I just downloaded a rental movie from iTunes to my iMac running OS Sierra 10.12.1. I want to transfer it to my iPad Air2 but do not see any way to do this. Can anyone help?

No need to transfer the movie, just re download it on the iPad.
You do need to transfer it. Rentals don't work like normal purchases:

If you rented the movie on your Mac or PC, but want to watch it on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, connect the devices and sync using USB. When you move a rented movie from your Mac or PC, it disappears from your computer’s iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as often as you want, but you can have it on only one device at a time.
If you rented the movie on your iOS device or Apple TV, you can’t move it to any other device.
If you rented the movie on your Apple TV, you can watch it on other Apple TVs, however, you can only watch on one Apple TV at a time.
I am connected with usb and the rented movie is on the iMac, but when I sync nothing happens it stays on the iMac. Any suggestions?

You can transfer rented movies from your computer to your iPod touch, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, if your device can play the rented item. If you have iPhone 3GS (or earlier) or iPod touch (third generation or earlier), you can also transfer rentals from your device to your computer.
This worked, but an addendum FYI, you don't know the movie issuing transferred unless you hit the 'download. tab on the upper right hand of the screen, which is only visible during the download unlike the older version which has the device and the iMac side by side to transfer.
