iMac 5K with 10.12.1 keeps waking up in every 30 mins

iMac keeps waking up in every 30 mins or so.

Hi all,

My iMac is suffering from insomnia, waking up every 30 mins or so. It is dark wake, so the screen is not turning on.

My energy savers are turned off for everything except "put hard disks to sleep when possible"

Also on iCloud, find my mac and back to my mac are off.

All internet sharing options are off.

Just as an example from Terminal;

This is happening every single time. I have trashed airport preferences, not helped. NVRAM reset and SMC not helped. I have added no multicast string to the mdnsresponder.plist, didnt help. As a router I use Airport Extreme, so technically should work fine with my iMac.

PS my iMac is late 2015 5K and I am using macOS Sierra 10.12.1, with all the updates.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Fatih

I have a similar problem with my wife's new-to-us cMP running 10.12.3. There are 3 other Macs in this house but they are set to never sleep so this hasn't been a problem that I've noticed. I set my wife's cMP to sleep after 2 hours and as I'm sitting here at my desk the other day I hear it click on for 1 minute and then go back to sleep. The display never came on.

Looking through the pmset logs, it appears that mDNSResponder is the culprit and is triggering "Maintenance Wake" operations.

Here are 3 such wake/sleep cycles from this morning.

I believe this was a problem with "discoveryd" and one reason why Apple switched back to using mDNSResponder, however now it seems this problem has made its way there as well.

Related to this, if her cMP does one of these wakes and I try to fully wake it up then it gets into a broken state where it won't fully wake up and it won't go back to sleep. I can ssh into it but remote desktop via "Screen Sharing" won't connect and times out. Similarly, issuing a "reboot" via ssh doesn't work and it took two "reboot -q" commands to force a reboot. Earlier in the day my "last resort" was to hold the power button until it powered off.

So, now I'm left keeping the cMP awake all the time as the wear-and-tear of it (and everything inside) waking every 2 hours seems excessive. If there were no moving/mechanical parts then I wouldn't care as much, but with there being a power relay and 4 spinning HDDs cycling every 2 hours I'd really like to avoid excessive cycling as this cMP is already 7 years old.

Hopefully Apple will fix this once and for all.

Hello fatihfrombirmingham,

I understand you're having an issue with your iMac not staying asleep. Let's try to work together to resolve this issue.

Thanks for going over the steps with the NVRAM and SMC reset, it's helpful to see those tests and the other System Preferences you've checked.

Next, let's have you try to isolate this concern further. Try following the steps below to use your iMac in Safe Mode and see if the issue occurs again:
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

Let us know if the issue occurs again.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Unfortunately safe mode didnt solve the problem either.

Any other thoughts?

Check your Energy Saver settings and see if 'Wake for network access' is turned on.

Also related to the above is a feature called Bonjour Sleep Proxy. Bonjour aka. Multicast DNS is the means by which computers automatically discover each other over the network. Some devices act as a Bonjour Sleep Proxy so they can keep a computers name alive on the network even when it is asleep. This allows another computer to 'wake' the sleeping computer when its bonjour network name is used.

The Apple AirPort Extreme as standard acts as a Bonjour Sleep Proxy. An Apple TV can do this as well but if you already have an AirPort Extreme the Apple TV does not bother doing this.

You can check to see if a device on your network is acting as a Bonjour sleep proxy by typing the following in Terminal.app you need to do Control-C to stop it searching.

dns-sd -B _sleep-proxy._udp local

Some comments seem to suggest this problem your having if it is not due to the above may only happen if your connected via WiFi. As you have a desktop computer perhaps you could try Ethernet instead.

I have also seen conflicting explanations for the cause of a XHRC wake up, these being network related, USB related or Bluetooth related. If it is network related then Wake for network access and/or Bonjour Sleep Proxy may be relevant, if it is Bluetooth it may be your wireless keyboard and/or mouse reconnecting to the Mac - these have off switches so try explicitly turning them off, if USB it would be a device plugged in, and example here might be someone knocking the mouse cable and generating activity, even having the mouse cable compressed might cause tension and result in it itself slowly moving as it relieves that compression.

Nov 18, 2016 10:19 AM in response to John Lockwood

Hi John,

Thank you very much for the suggestions. The 'Wake for network access' is off and was off.

I've put the command you have mentioned, the result is;

DATE: ---Fri 18 Nov 2016---

18:14:06.667 ...STARTING...

Timestamp A/R Flags if Domain Service Type Instance Name

18:14:06.668 Add 2 4 local. _sleep-proxy._udp. 30-35-10-70.1 Fatih's AirPort Extreme

So, as expected my AE has the sleep proxy.

Per your recommendation, I have unplugged all the USB cables, and also turned off the Bluetooth setting for waking up the computer.

So I'll test now if it sleeps. It is really getting annoying as between 1011 and 1809 it has had 41 Darkwakes.

Cheers,

Fatih

When this has happened, I wasn't at home, the bluetooth was off for wake up, and all the options on energy settings were off.

And also, I can't use Ethernet as the router is not in the same room where my computer is and I cant cable around.

And in fact, it just woke up by itself fully, I mean the display has turned on, while the bluetooth was off.

It says HID, which is user input. How is it possible to have user input while the bluetooth was off? And nothing is connected to the USB

Hi,

I have exactly the same issues with my iMac (5k) and asked the Apple Care team to find a solution. I will let you know when they get back to me, if at all. Might be a Sierra bug..

Have you tried to activate the option "enable bluetooth devices to wake up the computer"? When I tick the box, the Mac still wakes up, but the display stays off.

Christian

iMac 5K with 10.12.1 keeps waking up in every 30 mins
