Can you change color of bars in bar chart?

I have made a chart by using the spreadsheet and converting my data to a bar chart. I would like to change the default colors of the bars in the chart but so far haven't figured out how to do it, if indeed it is possible. Is it? If so, how should I go about it? I have been able to change the labels for the bars, but I want to change the colors of the bars themselves. Also, is it possible to change the arrows in the pictogram graph to some other clipart that might better represent the thing I am graphing?

Hi 'phants,

To the first part of your question: Yes, quite easily.

The Legend of your bar graph shows the name you have given to each series of data and the colour of the bar showing that data set. Click on the colour square to select it, then change the colour using the Fill button and the Color palette near the bottom of the Tools.

The colours of the lines in a Line graph can be changed in the same manner, except that you must select the Pen button rather than the Fill button.

To your second question: Not sure, but I'll check.

Barry

Hi again,

To question 2: Yes.

The Pictograph bars consist of two elements, the arrow and the background colour.

The background colour may be changed in the same manner as described in my previous post for changing bar colour.

The arrow is a graphic element which may be replaced with any other graphic object using cut and paste.

In Draw, create an object to use in place of the arrow, then copy it.

In the spreadsheet, double click the chart to open the Modify dialogue, then choose Series.

Click on the box showing the symbol (Arrow), then press delete to delete the current symbol, then Paste to paste in the new one.

Note the two controls under the Sample, which allow you to Repeat the sample shape, and to overlap the shapes (shapes higher in the stack overlap those below).

Barry,
Thanks for your quick reply. I tried what you suggested, but it didn't work. When I click on the color square in the legend, a small circle appears in the square, but I am unable to select any of the paint tools. (I can, however, toggle the chart size from bigger to smaller and toggle between shadows and no shadows for the legend text using the command and option keys.) Likewise, when I open the Modify dialogue and try to select the color in the sample box there, AppleWorks won't let me change it.

Similarly, when I open the Modify dialogue and try to delete the arrow symbol in the sample box, it won't go anywhere; I just get an alert sound and nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?

Paint tools won't work, as the bars are Draw objects, and you have only limited control over them while the chart is still connected to the spreadsheet. Click on the colour square in the Legend. The white dot indicates it's selected.
Now click on the Fill formatting button in the bottom section of the Tools (It's the almost invisible plain white button in the stack of three. The other two are the Pen formatting button—which has a black outline—and the Text formatting button—which has a T.). Then choose a colour from the Colors palette in the stack to the right of the three buttons.

Should work like this:

Double click the chart.
In the Modify dialogue, click Series.
In the Series dialogue, click the Sample box. A black outline should appear around the box, indicating it is selected.
Press Delete to delete the current image. You should then see only the background colour.
Press command-V to Paste your image.

Uncheck Repeating to get a single copy of the image, stretched to fill the bar.
Check Repeat to get a fixed size image that repeats to fill the bar.
Set the overlap percentage if you want the repeating image to overlap.

Click OK to return to the chart and view the results.

BTW, the reason I was unable to delete the picture the first time I tried was that I was using the wrong delete key. Evidently, you need to use the one on the main keyboard (the backspace key), and not the one above the arrows with the home, end, and page up and down keys.

The second one (in the block with home, end, etc. is a recent addition. It's the 'forward delete' key (notice the direction the symbol is pointing) and is effective in the text environment.

Good to hear it's working for you. Thanks for the 'solved' star.

Barry
