how to open closed port?

Since updating to OS Sierra, Transmission (my torrent application) reports that my ports are closed (and "Pork check site is down"), so I am unable to seed. ("Randomize" doesn't achieve anything.")

How do I get an open port?

(Everything worked fine until Sierra.)

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

you need to discuss with the developer or determine if a 3rd party is blocking your ability, that could be software, it could be your ISP not wanting you to use software primarily for pirating software, audio and video because it's illegal to do so, but OS X does not block ports and the firewall is by application only, and Transmission has already had it's distort hacked and was modified to be malware a few months ago.

Thanks, Drew Reece, for your good counsel. But nothing is working for me.

The CanyouSeeMe site reports, no matter what port number I enter, even 80: "

Error: I could not see your service on 216.15.119.133 on port (80)

Reason: Connection timed out

I don't know what to think of this result.

As for the Transmission site that directs me to http://192.168.0.1/

to configure my router, I cannot login. I don't know whether it wants my computer username and password, or my Airport Extreme name and password, but none of these works.

I can say that NAT is enabled on the Airport Extreme.

And I again did the Shields Up Universal Plug n Play test, which again said "The equipment at thetarget IP address did not respond to our UPnP probes!"

All of this is over my head. I can say that every other internet stuff is working normally, and that Transmission worked fine for years until the latest Sierra. (By the by, I'm not using Wireless. My ISP is RCN, via their cable modem, thence to my router. Perhaps tomorrow I'll disconnect the router, and see if it makes a difference.)

Thanks for your help, though.

Thanks. I'm connected via my ISP's cable modem (RCN), then to Apple's Airport Extreme router, thence by cable to my Mac. I don't use wireless on my Mac, just for the iPad.

As I said above, no matter what port I enter at the Can You See Me site, even 80, it reports:

Error: I could not see your service on 216.15.119.133 on port (80)

Reason: Connection timed out

Scanning for port 80 will fail - you are not running a web server on your home network & your ISP almost certainly will block that (unless you purchase business services). You need to test the port set in Transmission's preferences, after it has made a new random port & started up.

The Transmission wiki is providing generic info so you have to adapt it to fit your circumstances. Earlier you mentioned you had an Airport Extreme, that seems to be responsible for 'routing' on your network. It is possible that the cable modem is also doing NAT - it varies depending on many factors.

Basically whatever device that is running NAT also needs to have UPnP or NAT-PMP enabled. Please note that NAT is not the same as NAT-PMP, it may require extra config to enable both features.

You may be seeing Sierra issues but I suspect it is a conflict in network setup.

Of course it could also be your ISP is now filtering your internet connection to block torrenting software - in which case you should probably ask them if they have any policies that limit it - it isn't illegal in most places despite what people here may think, only the act of downloading copyrighted material will get you into legal trouble.

Frankly it may be simpler to setup a dedicated linux box, such as a raspberry pi or old PC if you are sure your Mac is the issue.

Airport Utility doesn't mention PMP or UPnP. Here are settings:

Checked: Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol

Checked: Enable IGMP Snooping.

Checked: Block incoming IPv6 connections.

Not checked: Allow Teredo tunnels

Checked: Allow incoming IPSec authentication

Router Move: DHCP and NAT

Port settings: (none)

I did an ISP inspection at the site reommended above, and it said I'm not being blocked or limited or anything in any way. I can ask them if nothing else works. Strangely, Transmission started seeding for a few hours this afternoon, then stopped.

'NAT Port Mapping Protocol'= NAT-PMP

🙂

I'm not sure what to suggest, if it is intermittent it may just be how other clients are sharing with you. If you are not sharing (as your ports are closed) others may consider you a 'leech' in torrenting terms. Some peers may share with leeches whilst others will not. Sadly this is at the limits of my understanding of torrenting software.

I'd look for help or info on the Transmission site too - they may know if the 'port check server' is failing.

It is a problem somewhere between their end and your end.

When Transmission prints a port number, that is the port number you need to give to Can You See Me.

Also, if you have wireless for your iPad, try it with your Mac just to help diagnose the problem.

Your upgrade to Sierra could have inadvertently caused the problem. As I mentioned before, anything your ISP gives you is junk - total junk. Sierra may no longer be able to talk to both the Airport Extreme and the RCN. The problem may be how your RCN device is connected to the Airport Extreme. Unfortunately, your best course of action would likely be to contact RCN for support. They would know the configuration of their device and would probably know how to best connect the Airport Extreme. Make sure to have a good book handy to read while you're on hold.
