audio glitches / pops when using external audio interfaces

This problem seem isolated to my MBP Early 2015 ; Retina 13-inch ; 3.1GHz Core i7 ; 16GB memory ; 512GB SSD ; Intel Iris 6100



I see console messages similar to this one when the glitches, pops occur

I do not experience the glitches and pops or console messages when using Built-In Output


The pops and glitches do not occur on older MBP models that I own.


I"ve ruled out just about everything but the MBP itself.


The problem occurs using different audio interfaces.

I have tried every combination of audio bitrate (16 or 24 bit ; 44.1kHz , 48kHz , 96kHz)


I can reproduce with Logic Pro X , MainStage and Reason.


I can reproduce with different IO Buffer Size (64, 128, 256...etc) within the DAW also.


I've reset the PRAM ; reinstalled OS. The problem occurs with El Capitan and Sierra.


Any suggestions or ideas what to look at next ?

I have this problem with my 15" Mid-2012 non-retina MacBook Pro (2.6 GHz Intel Core i7). I run a Metric Halo mio 2882 2D interface on a firewire port (legacy!) and the glitches only occur with audio running from the laptop and it seems to occur more frequently with certain apps (quicktime, iTunes, Safari, VLC, DVDplayer, etc). I have had this problem since El Capitan was released, over the last year and a half I have tried every possible solution I could think of. Clean install, reset pram, nvram, pmc, etc, nothing has worked. I am now running Sierra and the problem persists, it is incredibly annoying.


The symptom is that when playing audio from the laptop through the interface it will randomly "glitch" which I would describe as a popping and crackling noise with sample shift artifacts and then audio goes silent. If I am listening to a song through iTunes and the glitches occurs, I can get audio back by switching the sample rate on the interface, but this fix is temporary, audio will keep glitching until eventually switching sample rates will have no effect.


I have several external sources plugged into the interface as well and they will keep playing fine and are completely unaffected when the internal audio glitch occurs. The glitch is occurring with the laptop audio stream and not with the audio interface.


Here is a console log report when the glitch happens, it seems to be occurring between coreaudiod and whatever app is sending the audio stream (in this case it is iTunes):

Apple always updates it's I/O drivers with each OS update... USB, Thunderbolt, Firewire (when it was supported). There has been a long history of devices failing to work under a new OS update. MIDI Interfaces, Audio interfaces, Keyboard controllers...etc. Sometimes they're fixed after an incremental OS update, some of them never work correctly again. Of course it's never Apple's fault, except when it is. New Mac models are using cheaper third party hardware suppliers.... so it make's the problem more difficult to pin down. Hopefully the next Sierra update will fix some of the incompatibilities.

Yes, I agree, however, reverting back to El Capitan does not resolve the problem. Something in the hardware was changed during the Sierra upgrade that injected the problem. Apple automatically updates firmware during OS upgrades.

I have verified the SMC and EFI versions are the same between my two macbookpro12,1 models. One works great. The other experiences the problems noted above. So something else changed.
