Where can I download an older version of server

So I took over control of a client. They were running an old 10.7.5 macOS with Server. I am trying to update this thing but to get it to update to Sierra, I need to get Server to update with it. Since I cant update directly from the version of server that is on 10.7.5 all the way up to version 5.2 I have to do a two step upgrade. I was under the impression that 10.11 will run Server v4. So I upgrade to macOS 10.11, only to find out that I cant FIND server v4 anywhere to get me this 1st step update done. How do I complete this upgrade..right now he is down because I cant get the server online.

I have this issue, but with a Catch22 scenario. I can't upgrade from El Capitan to Sierra because {macOS Sierra supports macOS Server version 5.2. To upgrade your Server data you will first need to install OS X 10.10 or 10.11 and OS X Server version 4 or 5.} and I can't install macOS Server 5.2 because {Server can't be installed on "Macintosh HD" because OS X version 10.12.4 or later is required.}

There seems to be no way to install a version that allows the upgrade.

The app store in El Capitan prevents me from purchasing Server 5.2 due to OS version conflict.

Hi,

The answer quoted above was for a specific problem at a specific time, during the phasing in of Sierra and with specific versions of El Capitan and Sierra. It is now a couple of versions behind the adaption curve.

During such times, Apple sometimes have versions which will allow conversions and sometimes could work on both OS platforms during such transitions.

If you are far behind the adaption curve, you end up having a problem and the question is what to do about it and how to go about finding a solution. If you have backups in place, you might be able to roll back?

I would suggest that you kindly start your own threat, stating your present configuration in full, H/W and S/W and what you have in mind, what you want to achieve.

But, whatever you do, make sufficient backups of the DATA which is important to your operations and make sure that you know how to access that data.

"But you can buy Server 5.2 and download Server 5.0 or 5.1" - the question is 'how' ?!

All I can seem to do is download 5.2. Do you need a special keystroke when downloading ?

Was caught in the same catch22 as described earlier. Couldn't update server App because of older OS, couldn't update OS because of old server app. Went to 10.10 - still no server app available (needed to update OS first - OS update than says 'no can do', because you need to update the App first. After going back-and-forth I now have 10.11 with 5.2 , but need 5.1.7 to update my server data. Can't get 5.1.7. This is really a pain in the ...; thanks Apple - great work. Any help welcome..

No, a few years ago mac stopped making the server its own OS. Instead they charged $19.99 for an app that you can run on any mac. Version 4 was able to upgrade and pull the settings from old full blown server OS but version 5.2 cant. I was looking for version 4 of the server app, but I needed this thing online so I just blew away the /Library/Server folder so I could get rid of the error message that pops up, and then just reinstalled the new 5.2 app from scratch and rebuilt the settings...more work involved, but it is back up now.

  • It is possible to download older versions of an app if you want to use it on a system which is not up to date. The same is true for the Server app.
  • However the problem is that the different versions of Server, ie. Server 2, Server 3, Server 4 and macOS Server 5 are all different apps. So you cannot buy Server 5 and download Server 4. But you can buy Server 5.2 and download Server 5.0 or 5.1 and use it on Yosemite, for instance to do your upgrade, or on El Capitan etc.
  • Here is the method in such cases: Because Server 5.0.15 and Server 5.1.7 are able to convert server data in similar fashion from older versions of Server to get you right back in business with an upgrade.
  • If you have not purchased the app before, it will entail a once off cost of $19.99 and some of your time.
