does sierra os support open type fonts?
I am on an iMac and just upgraded to Sierra. I am a designer using an opentype font 'Ambrosia' to include in a logo design. I am unable to copy the font to my system folder...

Yes. macOS does support OpenType fonts. But the system folder is read-only. The easiest way to add fonts would be its the "Font Book" app. It will add font to a "Fonts" folder inside your home directory. You can manually add fonts to that folder yourself if you have a large number of fonts to import.
