That particular menu option will be greyed out if you have no files actively selected. It is intended to work on the current selection. No selection = nothing to do. Use File > Library > Organize Library... > Consolidate Files as this operates on the whole library.
Use the method outlined in Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy to backup the library so that you can efficiently back up in future by mirroring only the additions, deletions and updates to the backup set. Previewing the suggested updates also allows you to spot if something untoward has happened to the source library.

Which consolidate button are you referring to? To consolidate the entire library to the currently active media folder use File > Library > Organize Library... > Consolidate Files.
See Make a split library portable and Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for general advice.

Not this dialogue box...it's when I go Files > Library > Consolidate It's greyed out there. i am trying to consolidate files so that they are all in the iTunes folder before I copy the folder to my external HDD, which has more than enough room.
I realise that I didn't have the consolidate enabled as I was making libraries, so half my music is not actually in the library. i am trying to get it there without doing the whole thing over again. it took hours! I don't get why this isn't an bovious option when making libraries.
Thanks! So far you are surpassing the Turing Test, too!
Hi, and thanks for responding so quickly...that's the one. The 'Consolidate" button doesn't work. It's grayed out.
Thanks! That seems to have done it, and it was very easy.
You're welcome. 🙂
