iOS 10 SMS and MMS, Receiving messages from myself

Kind of hard to explain but whenever I receive an SMS message from somebody (whether it's from one person or a group), any outgoing message from me is sent out and then I receive that message from myself. I've noticed that the header, which includes all recipients to the conversation, includes myself. I've attached a screenshot of an SMS group message between 4 people (myself included). Notice that, at the top, it says 4 people. Previous to iOS 10, in Group messages, I would not be included in the list of recipients. This is causing an annoying issue where everytime I send out a message, I also receive that same message right after (as you can see in the thread). I'm also experiencing this when I receive an MMS from one person. It automatically puts me in a group message, where I am one of the recipients to my own messages. I hope I'm effectively explaining this. I'm using an iPhone 7 Plus on iOS 10.1.1

Since this is appearing in green, then someone in the group is a non-iOS user, so this is being sent as an MMS. That is what a group SMS is. SMS/MMS are handled by the carrier, and there is no settings on the iPhone to modify these. I suggest you contact your carrier and see what they have to say. Does this happen if you start the group, or if someone else starts the group? Are you using iMessage on your phone?

I do have iMessage enabled. This issue only occurs when non-iOS users contact me. Otherwise, the threads function normally, leaving me out of the list of my recipients. It makes sense that this would be a carrier issue. Although, this problem seems to have popped up right when I updated to iOS 10. I'm using AT&T and so are most of the people I talk to. I wonder if anybody else is having this problem.

I wasn't asking for something bizzare, just what was set in Send & Receive. If you want to get AT&T involved, I would not just go to AT&T, as you may only have an authorized reseller nearby as opposed to a corporate store, and you will certainly get different service. If you call, you can at least get in touch with 2nd tier support or their engineering. It may just require them to check the provisioning on your SMS/MMS account and resetting it.

So I went into settings>messages and saw that iMessage was still validating for my phone number. I then went into settings>phone and saw that "My Number" was "unknown". I then called AT&T and technical support told me to hard reset my phone. I did and then "my number" showed my number and iMessage settings validated. I went ahead and had a non-iOS user send me an SMS and it appears that the problem has been solved. It's now displaying SMS threads correctly. I suppose this issue was from upgrading to my iPhone 7 Plus. It's weird because I've been receiving phone calls and texts this whole time (2 months). So this setting has gone unnoticed this whole time, I assume. But it looks like you were right! Yay
