How to configure multiple airport express as access point

I currently have an Airport extreme and multiple airport express (3) setup to extend the range throughout my house. My home is wired for ethernet and I would like to configure the airport express as access points to provide better wi-fi. How do I configure them?

Also, I have an airport express that I only want to use for Airplay. Does this need to be configured in client mode? If so, how do I setup

Thank you

Are you still using OS X (10.6.2) on your Mac, as you indicate in your profile?

We understand that you want to connect the 3 AirPort Express devices using Ethernet. Are these the current A1392 versions, or the previous A1264 version, or a mix of both?

Do you have another additional AirPort Express that will be used only for AirPlay? Will this Express also connect using a wired Ethernet cable connection?

You have verified that the Ethernet network in the house is working correctly at this time, correct? Do all of the Ethernet cables connect back to an Ethernet "switch"?

Bob-

I am using 10.11.6 - sorry.

I want to configure theA1392 as access points. I set them up as range extenders but sometimes have spotty coverage and have been told it would be better using them as access points. We have multiple devices on wi-fi - mac, macbooks, ipads, iphones, apple TV's, printers. Probably 14-16 devices in total

I am using an A1264 as airplay only and this is connected wirelessly.

All ethernet work and connect back to a switch

Thanks Shawn

OK, thanks for the additional information.

Power off all of the A1392 Expresses

Wait a minute

Power up one of the A1392 Expresses and let it run a minute or two

Hold in the reset button on the back of the Express for 7-8 seconds, then release and allow a full minute for the Express to restart

Connect an Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the A1392 Express devices

Click the WiFi icon at the top of your Mac

Click on AirPort Express under the listing of New AirPort Base Station

That will get the setup "wizard" up and running. It will take a few seconds to analyze the network and then suggest the correct setup. The window will look similar to this, except that you will see your devices and network name:

Type in a device name like Express1, for example

Click Next

Watch the next screen carefully to verify that the Express is being set up to "extend using Ethernet", which will confirm that the setup wizard has picked up the Ethernet cable connection to the Express and will apply the correct settings

When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done

Repeat the same process for the other two Express devices that will connect using Ethernet, assigning device names like Express2 and Express3, for example, to keep things straight.

For the A1264 Express:

Open AirPort Utility (Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)

Click on the picture of the A1264 Express

Click Edit in the smaller window that appears

Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window

Change the setting for Wireless Mode from "Extend a wireless network" to "Join a wireless network"

Click Update at the lower right of the window to save the new settings and give the Express a minute to restart
