Mid 2010 15" Macbook Pro crashes frequently

Hi all, My MacBook Pro has been crashing frequently since updating to OS 10.12. I took the notebook to Genuis Bar and after a complete reinstall of the OS at Apple Store, it works smoothly for a little while - until I start reinstalling and working with the Adobe software (CS5) and MS Office again. Is it the graphics card? Or the lack of memory? Or is it out of date and not compatible anymore? Please help!! Many thanks!

OS 10.12.1

Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel HD Graphics 288 MB

To check out if RAM is also an issue (which it probably is running more than one app, such as those, at a time), run as you usually do for awhile, then go to Utilities > Activity Monitor > select the Memory tab, take a screen shot of it and post it here. I'm particularly interested in what Swap Used and Memory Pressure look like.

Note: I'm on Mavericks, so things might look different in Sierra.

If you're going to keep the MBP, and especially if you're going to use higher versions of CS, I recommend maxing out the RAM to 8GBs. Check out Crucial (http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Apple/macbook-pro-%2815-inc h%2C-mid-2010%29; you need the 8GB kit for $67.99) or Macsales (https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/8566DDR3S8GP/; $59.99) and installation video at Macsales/OWC (https://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_15_unibody_mid10_mem/) or illustrated step by step by step directions at ifixit.

You have the misfortune of having a model identifier 6.2 MBP that is experiencing GPU problems. There was a replacement program on these models but that has expired.

You can have the logic board replaced, but that will be at your expense.

You may download this application as an interim measure:

https://gfx.io/

This will allow you to disengage the discrete GPU and use only the integrated one. This will stop the kernel panics but at the expense of graphics performance.

Ciao..

Do you think it is worth spending the money to replace the logic board? I am looking to get a new Mac but still want to keep the existing one as a spare machine.

That depends upon the costs involved as well as the quality of the logicboard. I would be inclined to purchase one from iFixit.com or Powerbookmedic.com since they will have return privileges. I got a logicboard from Powerbookmedic.com a couple of years ago for my 2006 MBP. There were two choices, one that had been fully tested and one that had not been tested. I chose the latter which was much less expensive and it turned out to be fully functional. For your MBP, if given a choice, I would opt for one that has been tested. This I think would minimize the risk of the same problem reoccurring.

Ciao.
