How do I download El Capitan from App Store?

I'm attempting to upgrade an old iMac (11,2) from 10.6.8 to El Capitan.
When I bring up the El Capitan download in App Store the "Get" button does NOTHING. I'm signed in but cannot seem to initiate download.

This is the link I'm using.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-el-capitan/id1147835434?mt=12

Can anyone give me some insight as to what I'm doing wrong?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), null

Unless you have downloaded it before, it is no longer available (since Sierra was introduced). If your Mac does not qualify for Sierra, you can still get it, but it appears that yours does qualify - read everything here carefully:

However, you need another OS first in order to qualify, so read all the instructions in that link.

I've certainly read everything several times over. It clearly says that there is a special version of El Capitan that must be downloaded and installed BEFORE making the move to Sierra if you are on a machine running Snow Leopard 10.6.8... When I go to that page in App Store the "get" button is blue and seemingly usable but clicking it doesn't initiate download. If I go to the Sierra download page in App store the "get" button it grey seemingly showing me it isn't downloadable. I did however click that button as well and got the same result... NOTHING.

My choices are probably different because I'm already running Sierra. In any case, so you get the "get" button, but it does not download? Try signing out of the app store and the discussions here; then sign back in and see if that does the trick. And, you are sure your Mac does meet the requirements and you are signed with your regular Apple ID?

I'm about out of ideas.....

Well, I wish you would have mentioned that little fact (your GF's) - were you signed in with your Apple ID or your GF's? App store downloads are tied to the established Apple ID and machine. As well, the licensing agreement state that the license for OS or apps downloaded from the app store are NOT transferable, so she can't legally download it with her Apple ID and give it to you.

So, you can't legally give it to her either (unless you downloaded it using her Apple ID and password). That is how the licensing agreement is worded:

to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of the

Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer running OS X Yosemite, OS X

Mavericks, OS X Mountain Lion, OS X Lion or OS X Snow Leopard (“Mac Computer”) that

you own or control;

Yeah, I totally didn't think about that possibly being the deal. My machine is already on Sierra and I have another on Yosemeti that will be moving to Sierra later when some of the software on it catches up.

I was on her computer using MY Apple ID. It likely expected HER Apple ID to be used. Strange that, on this machine at work I used mine and had no issue even though I know the Apple ID associated with that machine is tied to my employer. Who knows? At least now I have it and can get her upgraded so her browser(s) are on par with the universe.
