Update Old Software

I want to update the software on my MacBook (OSX 10.6.8) to the newest platform (Sierra). How can I do this? The Sierra download page says I need to have a more modern operating system. Do I need to download an intermediary step?

Yes. Back up your data,check your applications for compatibility, click here, and download El Capitan from the Mac App Store.

If you previously got Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, or Yosemite, you can go through that version instead.
