MacBook Pro (15" with Touch Bar) Keyboard Clicking/Sticking When Machine is Warm

When my computer heats up, certain keys (particularly the N, M, <, >) keys begin to click and catch on something as I type. The keystrokes still register but there is a loud clicking sound and you can feel slight resistance as if they are catching or sticking to something. This doesn't happen when the machine is cool, but the warmer it runs the more pronounced the issue becomes.

My computer is still within the return period, so I plan on returning it and buying another one. Before I do this, is this issue specific to my computer or has anyone else experienced this? Thank you.

Hello. I don't have the key-sound issue

But, I feel the keyboard particularly warm in idle, just using Word or something similar, and after some hours of usage without the dGPU running, the toucher it seems a little hot to me. I don't hear the fan sounding...

When you had the key-sound issue, how hot was the keyboard? Is it normal to have a warm keyboard?

I am still on my 14 days return period.

Best wishes

I just got my 13" non touch bar and am experiencing the same issue on my 'e', 't', and '9' keys. I haven't noticed a difference when the computer is warm, hot or cool. But I did try repeatedly tapping the 't' key and the problem went away. Also, if I tap on the upper part of the key, the louder than normal sound is gone.

Support mentioned that a part of the key is rubbing on release so I guess the tolerance is a bit too much for everyday use. They instructed me to go to an Apple store or service provider and they will take a look at and replace the faulty keys if needed. So looks like they do in fact replace keys now. Unfortunately I am nowhere near an Apple store due to work so it is going to be a while before I figure this one out.

Same issue with my MBPtb 15" with Radeon 455. Noisy, sticky, clicking keys. Notably worse on the left-hand side of the keyboard. The issue is driving me nuts as it's killing productivity.

Exacerbated by heat so particularly bad when connected to an external monitor which I've only hooked up as I now have the correct USB-C adaptor.

Tried blowing, and vacuuming the keys. Using a piece of paper between the gaps. No luck. Not prepared to remove keys as I've done this on previous models and it was tricky enough back then.

Using smsFanControl to bring the heat down although unsure it it helps.

Outside of the return window by many weeks so Apple Support tell me to take it in however local Store hasn't had any vacancies for weeks.

The knowledge I've paid £2700 / $3200 on this piece of garbage just makes me more annoyed.

Hope everyone get's this issue resolved!

This is so frustrating. I am on my 4th 15" MBP Touchbar Mac. The last time I stayed there and warmed the mac up until the keys started clicking. The number 8 and 9 key click. So I figured I should settle with that since I won't be using the keys as much. For 2500 bucks that's a joke. I should get a perfect machine, not settle!. I wonder what Apple is going to do? I have had this replacement a little over a month. I was thinking about trying to take it in for a replacement and hopefully, they may have worked the kinks out of whatever batch they have now. Do you think they will replace it? Or should I just sit with it a little more?

I just bought this new Macbook 15' with TouchBar, 512GB SSD in Toronto Canada today(2017-03-12). I found my shift key on the left side has the pitched noise. Yes, this seems occur when the macbook is heated. When it cooled down, no noised. I will keep monitor this issue. A little frustrated with this experience, spending 3800 CAD dollar with this machine..

Yes. Wait! Too many issues with the current model. I had to return mine. The keyboard is the biggest problem. Sometimes reinstalling the system fixes a stuck key. And I totally agree with you, it is the most beautiful and sleek MBP I have ever used. And that makes it so painful to return it. It's gorgeous, and pretty useless for people who have to write a lot.

I bought the new MacBook Pro 2016 15 inch base model two days ago. I found there are several keys making really audible sound when the machine gets warmed. Then I exchange another. The issue happened again. Then, I had the third one and even fourth one! All of them have this issues. The last one I get have 8 buttons affected.

The guys in Genius Bar told me I can not exchange for more machines. I can only get them fixed. It is the the new machine I just take out of the box, and it is under repair for 3-5 days now (hopefully). I am a great fan of Apple products, and it is the first time that a two thousand $ products letting me feel soooooooooooooooooooooooo frustrated.

IMPROVE it, APPLE!

I have the same issue with my enter/return key. When the MacBook is warmed up after a couple hours of use the enter key makes the same loud/sharp clicking/popping noise when released. It happens only when I press on the left side of the key, but not on the right side of it.

Will return this MacBook and wait for Apple to release an official statement before I buy a replacement.

I just wanted to share some experience with this very issue, I bought a 512 GB base spec MB pro with the touchbar about a month and a half ago, since then I've exchanged it 6 times for this same issue. It wasn't until maybe the 5th machine that I realized it had to do with heat. All within the return period of 14 days they took it back no questions asked (with a few odd stares now and then, but that's to be expected when you're dealing with a cheaply made product, in a supposed high end technology retail store) this issue is absolutely unacceptable, I'm paying too much money for this run around business. I settled with a machine finally and decided I'd contact Apple support about the issue, after the many obnoxious time consuming tests over the phone she concluded that I'd need to take it back in t the Apple Store. I used the yes command to try and heat up the machine as well as show the workers a video I took. They heard it in the video and it was recreated in the store as well, they sent it out to replace the top case (which apparently is the whole keyboard) I got it back 3 days later, and guess what? 3 DIFFERENT keys are ming the same noise. So now at my wits end I ended up scheduling a call with support and gave the service rep an earful. Within 5 minutes he had me on hold waiting for the senior advisor, after about 10 minutes I ended up speaking with James. He proceeded to tell me that from what my situation sounds like, it's simply expected behavior, although undesirable (really apple? Your whole brand is starting to look undesirable...) I went into all the details about what the definition of expected behavior would be, as in the behavior should be uniform across the board, not intermittent etc. etc. We go back and forth, and eventually we settle on the ridiculous idea of contacting the engineering team to confirm that these intermittent, high pitched, varied key noises are in fact "expected behavior" from these 2000+ USD machines. I hope to hear back from him by Thursday of this week, never have I had such an issue with Apple. So upsetting...

I had a horrible experience with sending my MBP to the "Apple repair depot" for service on this issue. After 7 days my system was returned back with a scratched screen and dented underside case. So careless. Top that off with having the exact same issue with the keyboard. I am past my 14 day return period. Apple asked that I send it back again for repairs, no thanks. I demanded an advanced replacement which they agreed to. I use this machine for daily work and can not afford to be without it for another week. I'm waiting for it to be built and shipped (I had a build to order config). Hopefully this is resolved with the new system, we will see!

That sounds terrible! So sorry you had to go through that. I took about 5 minutes inspecting my computer in the store when the genius came out with it totally bare not in protective paper or anything, I was really hoping for no dents/scratches which I was relieved not to have found. I may try and ask for a replacement as well, from what I've been hearing, certain computers manufactured after a certain date are not showing the issue

Apr 6, 2017 6:57 AM in response to mbz365

Yep, same issue here. 13", Macbook Pro with Touch Bar.

Originally I had an issue with the F key failing, so I had the top case swapped out as a repair. The new top case had this issue with the H and K keys, so I sent it back (this time via mail). They replaced the top case again. This time it's the backspace key and L key that are affected.

So frustrated as I bought a custom configuration so I can't just walk in to the store and have them replace it.

Apr 9, 2017 5:58 AM in response to Smallafterall

woaaa, I thought it was just a "thing" which goes to my keyboard.. but its truly a issue for what I see.

I have a MacBook Pro 13" without the touchbar and the "expected behaviour" occurs on the "N" key only.

I didn't yet return anything to the Apple Store.. don't know if I should as I see that everyone endup with this issue, no matter how many times we send it to the Store.

So basically, we dont have any control on this issue, right?
