My 128gb Disk storage on my MacBook Air is being taken up by 110gb of 'System' and won't clear up space when I delete other files and folders

No matter how much I delete of other files it won't clear up space and the System file keeps getting larger. This problem occurred after updating to OS Sierra

If you are referring to the display from 'About this Mac', be advised that it is not reliable due to a bug in the program that generates it. Sometimes, but not always, a Spotlight reindex will correct it:

For accurate information, download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all of your files and the respective sizes.

iCloud is a syncing service with some amount of intelligence. Somehow (Apple's isn't really clear on this) it can purge old and unused files from your hard drive and keep them only in the cloud. How something is determined to be purgeable I don't know. If you have a 13" MBA it has an SD card slot and on Amazon you can find special SD cards that will fit in your computer without anything hanging out. They are called low profile SD cards. That is one possible solution to your problem. Another possible solution is an SSD upgrade from OWC. I have no affiliation with the company, I just a very satisfied customer.
