How can I explicitly set the color profile for a mov file
To my knowledge, quicktime movie files can contain embedded source color profiles, just like images or pdfs. However, contrary to the latter two, there is no way to explicitly assign a profile to movies using the colorsync app. Why is that so? Isn't that somehow inconsistent?
In case you wonder why I'm asking: I recently exported a movie using Davinci Resolve and noticed my colors didn't match resolve's preview. This doesn't happen when exporting from FCPX. Furthermore, it doesn't matter what output color space I choose within resolve, whenever I'll open it up in FCPX it'll tell me the colorspace is Rec.709. Conversely, playback won't take the original color space into account, making it look desatured, oversatured, contrastless ... depending on the original color space in relation to Rec.709.
During my research I stumbled across three different hints :
-) Neither Adobe Premiere nor Davinci Resolve do embed color profiles to their export, according to forum postings
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1610592
-) The color management pipeline in OSX automatically tries to deduct the videos format whenever there's none specified (in this case Rec.709 with what I guess a gamma of 1.8, therefore the shift)
-) Both Quicktime and FCPX use OSXs CMM to accurately reproduce the colors according to the monitors profile

Now, I'm a friend of this color managed approach and I don't understand why neither Resolve nor Premiere implement embedding of appropriate profiles. However, as the automatic deduction approach fails as well, I'm missing a convenient functionality to set this information myself. Especially in a natively color managed system like OSX.
So far, I've only heard about this x.264 encoder which embeds appropriate color information to fix this issue cleanly.

For the sake of consistency, the best way to implement this would be through colorsync, don't you agree?
