target display mode with usb-c

i was using a belkin mini display port cable to connect my 2009 iMac to my 2015 MacBook Pro. this allowed target display mode to work.

i recently purchased the new MacBook Pro, and the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. Plugging my Belkin cable into this adapter does not allow target display mode to function. I need a solution for making this work on my new machine. I no longer use the iMac as an iMac, but I really need to be able to use it as a monitor. I find it unacceptable to spend $4000, and not be able to continue to use this functionality.

If there is another adapter, that would be great. I am just careful with which cables I purchase, especially with all the functionality involved with the USB-C/T3.

I use an older iMac in the same way, but I have an Apple-branded cable to connect to my older Air. I assumed the same would work on my new MacBook with touch bar... however I thought I'd check reviews online first and stumbled on this thread.

I guess the question is whether or not our older laptops are communicating with the iMac via Thunderbolt protocol, or just DisplayPort. (I always assumed it was Thunderbolt since it allows the brightness to be controlled, but maybe I'm wrong.)

UPDATE: I just found this thread that confirms you must use a Thunderbolt cable to make Target Display Mode work from a 2016 MacBook to an iMac. Some users also said a third-party USB-C TO DisplayPort would also work, but that an Apple TB3 to TB2 adapter, with a DisplayPort cable, was not possible. http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/263938/is-it-possible-to-use-an-imac-in -target-display-mode-with-a-2016-macbook-pro-wit
