What is XQuartz and why do I have to install it to run and install certain applications? Is it safe?

Hello.

I've started installing applications I used to have in my old Windows laptop. I was going to download Inkscape, a vector graphics program, but the instructions say that I need to install XQuartz to run the application.

What is XQuartz and what is it for? Is it safe to install in my MacBook Pro? Are there any risks?

Thanks.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), null

What it is…

https://www.xquartz.org/

Is it safe? Yes

The only risk is how well Inkscape will run on El Capitan. It won't hurt anything.
