A few of the effects, generators etc won't go onto my clips. They show up on the right hand side of my screen but whenever I drag them onto a clip, when its finished rendering, nothing changes-its the same as it was before I tried to apply anything! Most of the others things seem to be working fine but id love to know what the problem is, thanks!!!

Version 10.2.3, OSX Sierra (10.12.1) mainly black and white, 50s TV effects-the main ones!
First thing to try is deleting preferences- hold down command and option while starting FCP X and click Delete Preferences.
Also, try closing the library and creating a new library - see if the new library has the same p
Thanks very much but I tried both of them already and it didn't work. the effects still won't go on the clips. Do you have any other suggestions of something I could do inside or outside of the program? Would it be something wrong with my iMac or something wrong with the software? maybe is it something I'm not doing right? do u have any other suggestions of something I might be able to try? thank you very much 🙂
Can you post a screenshot of one of those, showing the effect in the Inspector?
Theres a screen shot, hopefully you can figure out what the problem is!!!!
Try logging in on a new user account and see if the same thing happens.
If it does not happen in that account, then it is something in your own account that is causing the problem.
Otherwise, you may have to reinstall the application, but that may be problematic, since the current version is 10.3.
You could perhaps try the upgrade, keeping a zip copy of your current application and backups of your libraries, to be safe. (As usual, libraries will be updated to the new version and updated libraries will not be usable in the older one).
I tried using it on another user account and it worked perfectly on that! As all my files are on the main user id rather use it on that so how am I able to fix that account?

Run Etrecheck on your account and post its report here. It will let us see what your setup is and perhaps find among your login items and launch agents something suspect.
