Japanese input not working correctly in Safari search bar

I have an iPad Air 2, iOS 9.3.5

recently I have found, when switching from English to type in Japanese directly into the search bar, the letter K will not convert. I get a capital English letter K, then the following letters will proceed normally into Japanese. I use the romaji input for my iPad. Kana input for my iPhone which has no problem. I set auto-capitalization to turned off, and it shouldn't matter for Japanese input anyway. I searched both Japanese and English language forums, nobody is having my exact problem. It is only the first letter K, but every time it happens. I will want to type "かきくけこ" for instance, and I get "Kあきくけこ"

If I want to convert to kanji or a symbol etc, it will ignore the initial K, as if I hit enter after the letter.

I am very frustrated because a lot of words start with K! I don't want to update iOS, but i guess I will if that is the problem. but it just started randomly one day, after no updates.

I have some words in the user dictionary for easy conversion, and my interface language is Japanese, but I bought the iPad in the USA. I also have some other keyboards installed, but Japanese romaji input is the first one in list order.

Hello colorpine,

Thanks for all the details on the issue you're experiencing. If I’m understanding your post right, when you type the Japanese symbol for the letter "K", it appears in English. I certainly understand reaching out for help with this, especially if many of the words you use start with that letter. You’re in the right place for a resolution.

To troubleshoot this issue, I recommend following these steps first:
  1. Remove the calendar in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Edit. Tap the red minus sign next to the Japanese keyboard and then select Done.
  2. Restart your iPad: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
  3. Add the Japanese keyboard back to your iPad.
Test out your keyboard after those steps. If the issue persists, I recommend updating your iOS next. Keeping your iPad's software up to date is very important to making sure you get top performance. If you're unfamiliar with how to update, you can view the steps in Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch . Test out your keyboard once more after you have updated.
